Rotary Joystick games list
« on: December 09, 2004, 10:59:51 pm »
Hey, is there a list of Mame games that use an 8 way rotary joystick?

Here is what I can think of off the top of my head:

Ikari Warriors
Victory Road
Heavy Barrel
Gondomania (Of course)
Bermuda Triangle

But it would be nice to know the actual list. I am doing a repro of a Gondomania cab, using an old Dynamo cab and repro art...and I want to put all of the games in there that can use the setup.

Oh... I did go for 6 buttons too, just because...well... why not be able to play the fighters too, you know?

Legendary Wings?

Is there a how to on how to connect a set of those joysticks to mame?

Like on an Ipac? I have a set, but I was going to put them in a time soldier's game sometime If I got a cab decent to do it.

Well you need the IPac and also one of these:
http://members.rogers.com/druins22/ls30/

It "types" the letters for "left rotation" and "right rotation" that mame is looking for, for every click of rotation on the joystick.

Piece of cake install, and seemless operation.

Can these games be played with one normal joystick and one top fire joystick?

Mameotron THANKS!!!

that rocks.

Wait...wasn't XYBots on a rotary stick too?

That isn't listed on that site at all.

Looks like for the most part we picked them all though. I am suprised that so few fell through the cracks of memory.

I seem to be the only person I know that ever played Bermuda Triangle, or LIKED Gondomania...

I don't think I ever saw exterminator in the arcade, but I am looking forward to giving it a spin.

Although it would obviously not be the same, anything could be used to input "clockwise" & "counter clockwise".  If the top fire was not wired to stick 1, you could use it as l/r = cw/ccw.  BUt remember, these games usually used 2 buttons.  Using the top fire, then letting go to hit a button, then hand back to the stick, would make the game a little frustrating, I think.  You could even just have 2 buttons for cw & ccw.

Steve

Hmmmmm....  2nd stick control:

l=ccw
r=cw
u=button 1
d=button 2

with diagonals, you could rotate and simultaniously fire either weapon.

I like this.  Since I am a week from my first CP, can anyone out there try this and let us know how it works/feels?

From $20 for a good deal on ebay for a pair, to $50 NOS SNK for 1.

You can always hack your own rotary joysticks - there are a couple of hacks floating round on the board, 1 adds a mechanical mouse scrollwheel, the other adds some gears to connect top a mouse encoder wheel (think cheap optical rotary). I've also been successful just by using an old rotary encoder I pulled from a broken peice of audio kit. Its small and looks just like a little Pot except it keeps spinning. Mine clicks 24 times in 1 revolution although you can get different ones. Its handy in that it has the clicks like a mechanical rotary but it has outputs identical to an optical encoder (2 channels) that you can wire directly to an optipac...

there is a working heavy barrel cab on ebay right now, local to me.  Flirting with the idea of making a decidated rotary mame cab, or just gutting the controls of of it, and selling the rest.

dunno

RE: Hoagie_One

I personally love the rotary games. I say go for it. There is nothing in the world like hitting Ikari Warriors with a partner.

I fly my old high-school chum Jason in once a year for hours of glorious rotational battle.

RE: XYBots

Oh yeah.

RE: Lil Wolf

I have had no problems with Druin's board for my rotary. I have only tested it on Ikari Warriors, though, before I started sanding, puttying, and painting.

mameotron... NICE job at the gamelist per controller type action!! I had been inquiring as to how to create such a list (quick like) and then the rotary question came up...  I think posts like this rotary question are quite helpful to n00b's and would-be mamecab builders for figuring out their control panel needs.
SaiNRuB- nice posting, url'd gamelist and everything, gotta love KLOV.com!

Looks like some other folks are interested so here are some sources.

The original yellow topped sticks:
http://www.videoconnect.com/pages/joys.htm

For brand new Happs rotary joysticks:
http://www.happcontrols.com/joysticks/rotary&optical_joy.htm

The Happs have smooth control, but are beefier and require about 4" space under the hood. Also, the bear-top is not as satisfying to me as the yellow hex joystick top.

Okay, if memory serves, Forgotten Worlds was with a joystick a button and a spinner.

The joystick moved your position on the screen, the spinner moved your weapon in a circle, and the button was for fire.

It seems to me that a rotary joystick would be an even better solution than the original design.

Has anyone played Forgotten Worlds with the rotary joysticks?

Now I want to put my CP back together to...test it some more, before I finish my cab....

If memory serves me right Forgotten Worlds used a spinner that you pressed down for firing.I have a wealth of worthless arcade knowledge or maybe its not so worthless after all.

You are correct. Forgotten Worlds works real nice with a regular spinner and a top fire joystick too.

Spinner Joystick
Discs of Tron
Zwackery  (you need push/pull spinner for these, but you also need it for Forgotten Worlds)

Dial Rotary games
Frontline
Tin Star
Wild Western
Sheriff  (you need a GPWiz40 to get the rotary function for these games in MAME)

Also, not positive but I don't think TNK was optical.
THE SYSTEM          Popeye
