Calling all Aussies . . .
« on: December 07, 2004, 09:09:35 am »
Gday, I am just wondering what the Australian level of attendance of this board is. Im thinking of hosting a yahoo group for Aussie mame'ers, so we can trade cab info, dementions, suppliers, part vendors, reliving the "day" moments, etc.

Let me know what ya reckon . . . . . . .

I started this Aussie State Poll are while back:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,9014.0.html

This should give you an idea of how many Aussies there are on here, your yahoo group sounds like a good idea.

Better late than never...  Another Aussie poking his head outta the sand.

Been floating around for a while.  Was a guest for ages before I registered.

Time management and a regular mental hermit is my excuse.  ::)

Usually on the Main or Artwork forum.

I'm an aussie but i'm already on tomany forums that going on a yahoo group is just not in my time frame i hardly visit here as is (i only just came back after almost 2 years leave)

A site for aussies on best places to buy parts cabs etc would be a great idea :)

a list of parts we can buy in australia would be very handy and links to sites were cabs pop up like tradingpost etc

Just an idea as there are already somany groups it should be something different :)

I love going there just to see all the machines mmmmm i wanna go there again  ;D

But it's rude to drool and not buy anything  ;)

Hearing of rare places like this in OZ, where classics still exist, is great.  ;D

Curious, what's the asking price for some of his games.  I haven't seen an original old dedicated machine sell for ages (in OZ).

Believe it or not he is very resonable :)

he was gonna sell the japanese space invaders cocktail for $600 and it was in pretty good condition.

He has some dedicated cabs which are dead like final lap 2 which he would sell pretty cheaply.

He is in melbourne down in the eastern suburbs so if u want the address just ask :)

I might go down on saturday and take some pics of the place if he doesn't mind now i just need an excuse to go there..... hmmm

Another Adelaide boy..  ;D

I am part way through the build up of my own cab which features nice things like auto monitor rotation and one of the funkiest sound systems I think the MAME world has ever seen..

Will post more details soon both on BYOAC and OCAU.

Im an Aussie too. Im from Perth to be specific. Does anyone know any suppliers cheaper / generally "better" than Ozstick in Australia? I'd just like to know if Ozstick is running the show in Australia or if there are any other options. there is www.arcadegames.net in Perth but they never emailed me when I asked (twice) for mounting dimensions so they wont get my money.

Btw, this is my unfinished mame cocktail cabinet: www.mikesarcade.tk What do you think? Got any tips or suggestions?

Wow the AUD is quite strong at the moment  ;D Thanks for the tip, I just assumed it'd be cheaper to buy from Australia but now I'll be cutting down on the cost by about a third! Too bad they dont have the rectangular buttons with the light in them. I had planned to use them as a "credit" buttons. Do they absolutely not stock them over there or do they sell them if you enquire?

The buttons I'm talking about are these: http://ozstick.com.au/pb06.jpg aka "PB06"

I assume you mean that you can use the shift function to assign, say, the p1 button to the p1 credit button as well? If so I knew that, I just thought it would be cooler having a lit button for each player to insert credits  :D Alright, thanks I'll get the square buttons off of Oz stick

hey hey .. im in perth too.. Have a 52" rear pro Mame cab and in process of building an MP3 jukebox.

I found arcadegames.net were very hard and expensive to deal with, ozstick are easy to deal with and fairly cheap (considering), but havent got all the nice little bits like hard to get hold of buttons, so i had to order a keypad and few buttons from the US (Happ). Shipping was a killer.. the order i think was $40US and shipping was another $35US on top. Which makes it an expensive hobby to source ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- from over seas

That shipping seems steep for the items you purchased.

I just bought a Jpac + ArcadeVGA for my arcade machine.. nice and easy to hookup and for my jukebox ive just finished hacking a keyboard, going to interface it with a nice jukebox style keypad from Happ. Should be sweet when/if I finish it.

hey guys

calling from the sunny Gold Coast here. Id like to know if anyone knows if there is a supplier of Colored t - molding.

I buy my other stuff from ultimarc, rob roberts and oscar and no problems

I wasted $50 on teh spinner from ozsticks...was very dissapointed.

Id like to have some kind of email newsletter to aus/nz and would be happy to help out. This way its delivered to our inbox's and keeps us up to date etc

Any thoughts?

In relation to the T-molding, what colors are U after?  I have 2 suppliers here in Perth.  I have only used one of them at this stage and have only needed to order black & white.

As for the newsletter, I don't think there's enough going on in Aus to warrant one... not for Perth anyway.   Don't get me wrong, I like the idea, but it would probably be easier to start a thread here in the forum under 'Arcade Miscellaneous' and post the info in it....& will obviously notify you of any updates.  What kind of info would you want in the newsletter?

Um, Yes I think.
This is the only type I ever saw in Oz growing up, did not know of all the variations until I did a bit of research here.
Just a couple of photos. Have more but need to sit down and build a proper site around it.
http://home.austarnet.com.au/kemptest/arcade/P6020011sm.jpg
http://home.austarnet.com.au/kemptest/arcade/P6020016sm.jpg

Have a bit more artwork on it, just cutouts under the glass, going to jump over to the Artwork forum and see how the fancier stuff is done.
Construction is fine except for the monitor fitting, will improve this on the next ones, my one is'nt so bad as I know its not getting moved around
Inspiration was from the cabinet on this site

Danny_Galaga, just checked out your site and have had some serious De-javu.
Based on the same cabinet! (except for the rotating part). And I am going to buy a Torana to start another project with any money I can squeeze out of the 4 Cabinets (LH not LJ).
Thinking of doing some airbrush type stuff on the lower sides of mine to liven up the black on black on black theme.

How about this.... IMO a thread relating to Australian localised information would be handy.  For eg, Australian based part/machine suppliers & locations, auctions, trade & free stuff etc etc.

IMO a thread in the 'Arcade Misc.' sub-forum, headed 'Local OZ Arcade Info' would be plenty.  I'll could PM one of the admins, for a long shot, and see if they could sticky the thread!?

So? What do you think?

Inspiration was from the cabinet on this site
http://www.cia.com.au/ihs/cocktail/cabinet.html

yes, cia was one of the ones that got me started too, him and this one which has the most important measurements and diagrams:

http://underworld.fortunecity.com/fifa/294/

excellent work on your cab too. when you have a bit of a site going PM me so i can add it to my list. i've nine 'school desk' cab links so far (",)
so is your LH a six or eight?

Sorry.  The suppliers I use don't stock these colors.  One place states however that he can get this stuff in...however you can only buy it by the 150m roll @$90.00...which is a damn good price!   He stated his supplier is in the eastern states.

Regardless, I contacted the 3 places I know in Perth..and they all stock the same colors. ie black, white, greys, bieges etc.

Sorry mate.

..in relation to this 'Oz Arcade Info' sticky thread I was throwing around...
I honestly think we just keep utilising this thread instead for that type of info.   Just easier.  Keep things simple.

PM Peale about it.  He has OK'd a sticky thread..... So go for it.  A sub-forum may be overboard.

As for the supplier, I'll find out.

For all the aussie on the lists a new Australian based forum has started at http://218.214.97.249/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl. I have posted a link for BYOAC as well as many of us have relied upon this site to get us started.

Spriggy (or anyone else)

Can you give me the number of the place you buy your T-molding from in Perth?

Also can someone advise what size slot cutter is needed for the T molding - OzStick say 2.4mm -  3.0mm and no more than 15mm deep but every place I ring say the slot cutter is approx 50mm in diameter, therefore you'd get around a 25mm deep slot..??

And as for cars... I have a HR that I've done up a little bit - check it out HERE...

I was over at my cabinet builder mates house this afternoon and asked him - he rang up his supplier (can't remmeber the name atm) and order some black 20mm T-molding for $2.00 per metre plus GST ($2.20).  So it isn't that much cheaper than somewhere like Ozsticks.com - He is also hooking me up with a slot cutter to borrow so at least I don't have to buy one.

Priced a slot cutter at Flintware tool supplies here in Adelaide and was $52 each..!! :o

The 20mm T-molding is way bigger than I need (16mm MDF) but he said it was common practice to cut it down..

There is also a Galvins here in Adelaide..

Filtek is in WA.  Dunno what their pricing is like:

Another guy from Perth! I think that makes the two of us and maybe one other guy  :D. I had visited filtek once, and it seemed like an allright kinda place. The "junkyard" has a heap of arcades - I even saw a two car seater sit down cab. Keep in mind though that I do not think they were protected very well. If my memory serves me correct, they were stored under a carport. If you are thinking of buying buttons from there too just take a look at them before you buy. I almost bought some but the "skirts" around the button were slightly different for different coloured buttons as well as the depth of the dimple.

Good luck!

Thanks, I'll check out Filtek with a critical eye.

Nice to hear from another Perth member D5A1AC
i checked out your page and i really like what you've done so far

I actually managed to snap up an empty lai lowboy from ebay a few months ago, only $20 and it was only down the road in malaga.

i've told a mate of mine all about my project and now he want's one too, which is why i'm after another shell.

i've attached a pic of my (very much) work in progress setup (pretty unimpressive i know) - basically i wanted it playable asap, and i'm slowly moving it towards it's true potential

Nice cab! I was thinking of going for a black-red-black 3X2 button layout (the same as yours bar the 7th button and I'll use ball-top Jsticks) And after seeing your cab I'm sure that I will now  :D

It's interesting that you decided to get it working before finishing it - I've gone for the exact opposite approach. I have the PC set up and whatnot but the arcade buttons/joysticks are going to be the last thing I buy because If I were able to play it I'd never get time to finish it!

well i've got a 15 month old daughter and no shed, so i needed all the bits contained where she couldn't get to them, and i can only grab limited amounts of time here and there to do 1 small job at a time, so i figured i'd put together everything i had and slowly refine it. (also i'm really impatient, lol)

it's slow but steady progress

Also im in the process of making a jukebox with touchscreen, remote and wireless av sending to a tv (also wireless network back to my pc). Coming along very nicely atm, but just finding the time to get it all together is the trouble. I'll post a pic of that too

Its all wired up now with fans and power and reset illuminated buttons on the back and the most important thing, 2 drink holders  as you can see in the photo :)

Wow, your rear projection mame machine is awesome! I would love to have something like that. Are the tubes there to hide the wires or to make it seem more like one structure? It might be a little more portable without those.

Cheers buddy. Playing bubble bobble on a 52" screen is quite the experience i tell you :)

The three tubes (only one connected in photo) just are used to run the wires to and from the CP (power and monitor signal).

Haven't been on the forum for a while...again.  Screw this illness stuff!!!  Hopefully will be back into the arcade madness soon...  health is a priority at the moment.

Just quickly though.  For the Perth lads asking questions, your best bet for cabs is the Quokka unfortunately.  Filtek's workshop has been closed for little while and their junkyard hasn't really been around for about 3 years.  The Quokka usually only has full working machines however.  Most of these aren't worth more than $300..so their usually overpriced.  WA based ebay auctions would be your next bet.  I have only 1 gutted LAI lowboy left and my mate has dibs on it (I'm doing a mame conversion for him).

Following that (as I do), build them from scratch.  Plenty of plans on Jakobuds site and other areas.  A search of the BYOAC forum will reveal all you need.

If you need parts and your located in Perth, just ask me.  I've priced and bought from within Perth, Aus and overseas, comparing quality and price.  Until prices come down here in Aus, overseas is your best bet for 70% of the main parts..for quality and price.

Good luck.

Okay, not advertising or nothing, but I'm in the process of building an Australia arcade related site. Hoping to have it finished in the next couple of weeks. The primary purpose is to build a common site for Aussie Arcade Enthusiasts, Collecter and Professionals.

Present implementation include
1) Trading Post
2) Auction
3) Forum
4) Dealer Directory

Anyone interested, let me know. I'm looking for people to help out with stuff including administration etc.

http://www.coinop.com.au

I'll post it when the site is completed.

there is www.arcadegames.net in Perth but they never emailed me when I asked (twice) for mounting dimensions so they wont get my money.

The reason you got no response is because they are no longer in business.  Read more here:  http://www.arcadegames.net/aboutus.htm
