WANTED: your tube readings
« on: November 28, 2004, 08:15:25 pm »
I'm compiling a list of common arcade tubes and their resistance values across the vertical and horizontal coils.  My goal is to have database set up (excel spreadsheet) of tube values so that if you find yourself with more chassis than tubes, you can find a suitable donor tube and re-use those old chassis'.  Here's what i have so far:

Pentranic 1425
K7000 19"
G07
K4616
K7191
K4951

Sadly these are all in my basement (much to her dismay :-[)

So if you have a hantarex, other wells gardner or whatever please get a reading next time you get a chance and send it to me and I will include it on the master list (which I will attach to the FAQ for future reference).

thanks!

edit: Summary of readings will be kept in the FAQ and I will update them as they come in to this thread

This is a great idea.

Now if I can just figure out which setting on my multimeter is resistance...

I don't know anything about monitors, but have about 20 games in my basement.  I didn't know it was that easy to swap chassis,  (from a compatibility point of view).  Seems like good information to have.  If it's easy, I would love to help.  Just tell me how, or link to a page that does.  Or if you are on Long Island, you are welcome to come measure away yourself.

yeah i thought people would like to have this info and i'm surprised it hasn't been compiled to date considering how alot of this stuff is getting parted out and what not.  Here's what i did to get the values (i take no responsibility or even blame if someone elctrocutes themselves)

If possible i discharged the monitor--then measured the red/blue (for horiz) and yellow/grn (for vertical) using the 200ohms settings on the digital multimeter.

NOT RECOMMENDED:  where the monitor was in a game i unplugged the game, and measured the color points off the yoke to get the readings--without touching anything else.  worked fine--again not recommended and if you do do it--give the game time to sit (a few hours a t least) before trying this as i have no idea if there are normally errant voltages int he yoke when its off.

So it's okay to measure off the back of the neckboard after you discharge?

after you discharge you should be 98% safe (there may be some residual charges left in the larger caps on the main chassis board) but yeah.  For the purposes of this info gathering i would need the yoke ohm readings--its usually 1 plug with 4 wires that can only be plugged in one way and is directly connected to the yoke of the tube.  found a pic on the web to clarify--not the best though... :P

I have some more info on more models, but I also log the yoke wire colors (some makes/models use different colors), picture tube type number (and pin count) yoke dc resistance, etc. as it helps if doing an 8liners transplant.

Just a thought... if you're measuring coils...  aren't you going to need an impedance mesurement (Henrys) as well?

No, I'm quoting DC resistance measurements for the yoke windings as most people here don't have or know what an "Impedance meter" is. Most people here do have an ohmmeter or multimeter handy. I'm just trying to keep it simple for everyone here.

Would anyone be interested in having information like this to a posted in a more "permanent" home? I'd be willing to create a database for it but I don't wanna do it if nobody's gonna use it

This is going to sound really stupid.

In a practical application, if you have a tube A but no board, how do you figure which compatible board goes with it?

I understand the CRT model in each monitor model is noted. But didn't one company leverage different CRT manufacturers and different boards for some of their monitor models? I remember reading about how one monitor model either came with the OEM or Zenith guts and swapping these are out of the question.

What I'm saying is. Isn't there the possibility that you can have Tube A in a chassis for Tube B? I might have at least one monitor CRT in my possession that seems to be missing any identication. I've had to extrapolate what it is based on the butchered board attached.

Does this help?? If I only knew how to attach a file/spreadsheet it would make more sense.

By the way, most important is impedance, resistance is very mis leading with the most important thing Horizontal.

Your meter leads alone can sway these by an ohm or so.

You can actualy by an inductance/ capacitance meter for less than $50 I will have to find the website again and will post it later along with how to take the readings.

Meanwhile Standard Res yokes should read 1.0 to 1.35 mh horiz
Mid res .45 to .75
VGA around .3
Tri-res .24 to ,31
SVGA and lower .2 and lower

This is where some manufactures like K...t and N...t Screwed up. Don't follow this and overheated yokes and blown HOT's

Good Luck

Does this help?? If I only knew how to attach a file/spreadsheet it would make more sense.

I can't say it does (not enough experience), but I'll tell you how to attach a file in exchange for what you put up.  ;)

When post a message here, there's a link below where you enter your message labeled "Additional Options..." Click it and it expands into a menu. There you can browse and upload txt, jpg, gif, pdf, png or zip files smaller than 512K. You can pack your spreadsheet into a .zip and post it.

Sorry to bump this up but this is a great post. Has anyone added to this list?
