Moon Patrol: Horizontal or Vertical?

I always thought of Moon Patrol as being a Horizontal scrolling game, but when I looked at it in MameWah tonight I noticed it was described as "Vertical Raster".  Hmmmm... so I started it up and it played in, basically, a square.... "wierd", I thought to myself, but it didn't look squeezed.

Cranking it up in Mame32 it's stretched horizontally to fit my PC monitor and it looks more like I remember it... but the text does appear to be stretched out horizontally a bit.

From the Moon Patrol cab pictures I've found, it does seem that it was on a horizontal screen, but the "Screen Resolution" (according to MAME) is 240x248 which is almost square.

Were there vertical cabs of this game?  Why would the dimensions be so square-y?  Anyone?

paigeoliver:

It is a horizontal game, it is also the resolution you described. There are no vertical versions of it.

So was it stretched to fill a horizontal monitor (like Mame32 does)?

paigeoliver:

Monitors have both horizontal and vertical size adjustments, which is why there were SO MANY different CGA resolutions.

It does come up quite squarish on an arcade monitor unless you adjust your monitor specifically for it. I know it does reach the top, but not the sides with my arcadevga and WG monitor. I can adjust the monitor to force it to go full width, which is what was done on the real hardware.

I saw a real Moon Patrol machine about a month ago, and it filled the whole screen.

That's how I remember it (filling the whole horizontal screen) but I thought I might have been wrong
Thanks!
