New computer or new frontend?
Crazy Cooter:
If the comp is going into a cab, I'd stick with win98 with 256mb ram. that will play all the roms fine. If you want to play KI 1 & 2, follow Peales advice.
EmuHead:
Sorry for the misinformation there (4ghz for KI), 'twas carnevil i was thinking of i believe. Im going to scrap XP tonight and go back to 98. Will post in the morning with info. Wish me luck.

I have sold more than one mame cabinet that had the neo geo games running full frame rate all the time, with a celeron 400 under the hood.
Just use Mame .55 for older comps. Every game supported by that version should run full speed on 400 mhz+ hardware, and there hasn't been an "important" game added since then that will run on that hardware anyway, thus there is almost no reason to use a mame newer than .55 unless you have a ghz+ computer.
Also, once again. I am considering putting this information in my signature in 60 pt bold flashing type.
Your video card DOES NOT MATTER for Mame. Not at all. Not one bit. Mame is not a 3D application.
I have even gone so far as to test out games using both an ancient 1MB Ati video card and a newer 128 MB monster of a card. Framerates with throttling turned off were essentially identical. Said 1MB ati card is in my 1.2 ghz mame computer right now.

Thanks for all the replies, luckily i have found a frontend that does what I was looking for, so I will just use an older version of mame for games that run slowly.

Well, one problem I seem to have with using older versions of mame is that certain roms that should work on older versions are missing files when I try them, but still work normally when using a newer version of mame.

Yes it can be awkward to get all your roms to work with old MAME versions. ClrMAME helps, but not for ALL games...
