The BEST vertical shooter EVER*************
Xiaou2:
Thunderforce II - best shooter ever - imop. (tho not really vertical. But - Its got horizontal and top view missions)
On sega genesis,.. in mame as megaplay (but not sure if working well in mame) Also, was originally developed on sharp's x68000 computer (also known as fm-towns)... with more levels, better gfx details and sounds, much harder as well.
Top view parts are a bit bland compared to the side
scolling levels... which are jaw droppingly cool (even better the higher you get!) Sweet fast smooth play and lots of weapons (seven total capacity!). Great synth tunes and sounds.
Better than the sequals in many ways.
Very 'replayable' as well.

hehe. thats cos xevious blows! although i do concede that back in the day i thought it was pretty cool. and it was pretty advanced at the time.
now, bells & whistles. why has no one mentioned THAT?
edit: just checked out aerofighters. excellent game. i played that a bit back in its day. one of the games mentioned here must be a clone of it or something because i was checking out some of the above titles when i came across aerofighters...

Xevious is not a good game, it was just a different game that added some new ideas. Many other games went on and used those ideas very effectively.
Xevious is also one of the LEAST collectable classic atari games, along with Fast Freddie and Arabian.
DYNAGOD:
