Fan speed selection

Dexter:
Hi all,

I'm fitting a coolermaster fan to my cocktail cab to extract the hot air. It's fairly noisy and need to switch it to low speed operation. Just wondering how to do this. If I connect the yellow wire to the red one will this select low speed op on the fan?? It's connected to the PC via a 4 pin molex adapter

Thanks

Dexter

Hello,

I recently had the same dilemma with another fan. I'm not sure of the details of how your fan connects to the PC, but what I did was to simply connect my fan between the red and black wires coming from the PC power supply rather than the yellow and black, so it ran at 5v instead of 12v.

Other solutions suggested to me included putting a resistor in line with the yellow wire, to reduce the voltage and hence the speed, or even a potentiometer so I could adjust the speed. Hope this is some help.

You could also hook the fan to the yellow and red wires for 7 volts.   (12-5=7)  This will give you more speed than the 5-volts but less noise than the 12-volts. (obviously)

You could get a fanbus too.  They make 'em to fit drive bays and you could dial it down to a tolerable level.  Going that route, follow their directions.

zalman fanmate is a cheapish option
