I got a piece of glass cut for $53. They must be using special tiffany glass or something for $1000.

I would avoid glass. Go for lexan, acrylic or plexi etc.. Glass I got cracked.

Would a reason he quoted me $1000 be that the glass I want cut is "very" custom.

The pic attached shows the shape of the top and I was hoping to have it cut in that shape (the only difference being a LITTLE of glass overhang over the control panels. So..theres quite a few rounded corners to make....would this make the huge difference?

Could be i suppose.  I have never had glass made with "inside" cuts like that.  Why don't you want the glass to just be even with the top and cover the panels like on a standard midway?  Do you think it would get in the way because your panels are deep?
