New vector project: girl (opinions wanted)
« on: September 08, 2004, 01:34:56 pm »
To complement my car artwork (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=13;action=display;threadid=21752;start=msg193723#msg193723) I'm adding a girl to complement the artwork. Here is a little teaser. I'll post updates on this artwork in this thread.

The car vector is not yet complete and that artwork project isn't cancelled or put on hold, so don't worry. I just needed a break from the metallic green artwork and I planned to have a girl on the cab anyway ;)

In case you are wondering: the girl is based on Scott Campbell's Danger Girl: Abbey Chase. The green outfit she wears is perfectly adjustable to make it into a racing overall.

As usual, I'm curious of what you think  :)

I still don't see how you do that in Visio.  It must be your superhuman powers.

When you switch of the grid and modify some 'snap and glue' settings, the vector tool in Visio uses the same principles as in Adobe Illustrator: connectionpoints and bezier handles.
I'm used to work with Visio in my daily job so I know a lot of shotcuts and I feel the way new curves are added is more intuitive (to me).

So no superhuman powers here (I wish! ;) ... that could fill a whole new topic on the "everything else" board: What would YOU do with superpowers ... ;D )

...and a little update. Had some spare time for drawing. Note that I'm planning to change the bikini into a more race themed suit.

AH... Danger Girl.  I always liked J. Scott Campbell.  Gen 13 was sweet.  Your work looks really good.  Will that be compatible with Illustrator?  You work in Visio right?

Why?

Can't bikini girls race cars?  I think the pistol and knife are more out of place than the bikini

Yep, I work in Visio. My other piece of vector art was converted to AI format. I don't have AI myself, and I had no responses about the file.
The art in AI compatible format (EPS) can be downloaded here: http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/details.php?image_id=275
BOYAC thread here: http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=13;action=display;threadid=16195
It should give a good indication what the Visio-to-Adobe converter produces.
Can anyone please confirm what the quality is of the conversion process (ie. does the AI file look good)?

You're right, I might keep the bikini :) The knife and pistol will definitly be removed though...

SO COOL! I'm a biiiiig Danger Girl fan. I've been thinking for some time about doing artwork for a Danger Girl cab theme and calling it "Dangercade" The DG sketchbook has a fantastic spread that looks like a Bond movie opener... it's just BEGGING to become a marquee :)

That is fantastic vector work! Can hardly wait to see the finished product.

I was browsing my DG Sketchbook (yep, I'm a fan too, I even have the DG statuettes on my monitor...) to see what bond-like -spread you meant. I found one that looks like it on page ... uh...no page numbers, it's in the blue section the page after the pinball sketch. Is that the one you refer to?

Ooops. Not the Sketchbook. Its in the Dangerous Collection Vol. 1. :P  However it looks like the sketch you pointed out was actually an early version of it. Hmmmm. Sorry for the wonky image, scanner isn't available. I think a marquee based on this, with the name full size left to right, and the girls rearranged for a more horizontal layout would be amazing. Kinda makes me want to do a set of alternate art for my cab. Most of all I want the Abbey Chase gun in the spa layout on a CP, but I don't think I can post the image here  ;) Sigh... like my wife would let the cab in the living room THEN.

Today I had a little time to do some drawing...

@Pixelhugger: Oh yeah, the Abbey-in-bubblebath picture would look great on a CP. Might be a little distracting. I also find the picture where Sydney's suit is (partially) unzipped (issue #6 last 2 pages) very tempting to vectorise as sideart for a cab. My wife agreed that the picture I'm vectorising now is decent enough, don't think she would agree with the Sydney picture...  ;)
Heh, this conversation might lure people who don't know the comic into reading it ;D

Another update. The vectorisation process is much quicker than I expected  :) The image has nice clean lines (or should I say 'curves' ;) ) which are nicely tracable.

note: some shades are lost in the conversion to .gif format - only 256 colours- so there is some artefacting in the attached image. The vector shades are in true full-colour.

How does vector shading work in Visio? Is it like the gradient mesh tool in Illustrator.... where you use repositionable intersecting points on a grid to specify colors to blend? Or is it like the gradient tool where you can pick a direction for a linear or circular gradient? I ask because the subtlety you are achieving is impressive.  :o

Thanks for the compliment, I'm quite pleased with the result if I may say so myself ;)

I attached an image to demonstrate how the gradient fills work in Visio.
Visio can do a set of prefixed shade patterns (left-to-right, top-to-bottom circular etc.). This method is quite limiting since you can't really set the direction of the shade: top-left to bottom right is always at an angle of 45 degrees no matter what the shape looks like.  A mesh would be a great addition or at least a direction for the shade would help a lot.
I divide the shape in general shades and colour those shapes to achieve a better shading. For example the arm: I divided it in a few shapes. The outer shape is the shadow and uses the darkest tone of fleshcolour I use. The inside shapes have gradients top-to-bottom (green in the attached image) light pink to the dark fleshtone so it fades into the same tone at the wrist. Same goes for the other shape which has a circular shade from the top-left (light) to the dark flesh tone on the outside.

Almost done. The only thing left to do is the 'net' part in the bikini... which is probably the hardest part to vectorise...

Niiice.  So are you going to put a racing helmet in her hand instead of a gun or something?  This is supposed to go with your car right?

Yep, the art is meant to go with the car. I'm going to experiment with drawing a helmet in her hand.
First however I want to finish the piece of artwork like this, in case the helmet experiment fails  ;)
I'll be offline for a few days so updates will have to wait.

Looking good.  You know... it looks like you're going more for street racing theme.  I'm not sure if a helmet would fit.  If it was a motorcycle yeah.  Maybe you should have her dangling some car keys or something in the hand you haven't drawn yet.  I'm sure whatever you do it will be awsome.

The top two are vector the other graphics are pics I was using for reference.

If you want the ai files, just email me.

Thanks for the references BobbyG66!

I've been experimenting a little. I'm not yet happy with the result. (note: the hand is not yet finished). Maybe when I add some more shading and make the black outlines a little stronger. The idea is that she loosly let the helmet lean on het shoulder (dunno the correct english word -not my native tongue- but I think it's "nonchelance"?)

Let me know what you think.

I also think Witchboard's opinion is a good one. I didn't look at it that way at first but I'm indeed aiming more for the streetracing theme (I plan to have Burnout 3 in the cab) so a set of carkeys might be a good idea. .

I've been experimenting with this idea (see attached image) to flesh out the picture with an explosion on the background. I haven't made an effort yet to draw a vectorised explosion so I used circles to illustrate the idea.

What do you think?

I think it would look cool.  It would break the monotony of all the green.  Not that it's bad, just that having something in contrast to the green would really make it "pop".  I'v been watching too much home decorating shows with the wife.  ::)

I think it would look cool but I just wonder why.  Other than looking cool.

What color is the rest of the Cab?

How about smoke from a burnout?

Yeah, I'm going to try and draw an explosion. I've been doing some comicbook research and I hope I manage to paint one, some explosions have complex colour shades  :-\. Besides that, the explosion needs to match the artistic style of the car and girl.

PS. no comment on bra sizes of superheroines!  ;D Though my next project might be Red Monika from Battlechasers. Original a Joe Mad comic, Scott Campbell has also painted her once. (if your face looks like this:  ??? then try here for Joe's originals and J.S. Campbell's version.)

Just out of curiosity how long did the vectorizing of the girl take? ... as in total hours. I'm working on a couple of characters for someone's cab and achieving this kind of detail is taking me FOREVER.

Rough estimate: 10-12 hours. I usually take rounds of about 2 hours of drawing.

The explosion I attempted didn't work out the way I liked it. Mainly because the lack of shading tools in Visio - there were 'hard' boundaries because it's nearly impossible to get the exact colours in a fade in two different shapes to line up. In AI it would probably be one shape with a gradient mesh on it.

It's about time you dusted off this project.  I was wondering what ever became of it.

Yeah, the project is currently on low on my priority list. Which doesn't mean that it will be trashed or so, I like this project way too much so the driving cab with this artwork will one day be a reality.
My plans require time, cash and space: three things I have little of at the moment. My family will move to a bigger house in march 2005 (my wife approved the games room! hurrah!), when the moving is done I hope the other two requirements will follow soon enough.
So keep an eye on the forum sometime next year... a bright green driving cab might appear in the project announcement board!
