--- Quote from: Trillian on September 09, 2004, 10:32:08 am ---as u are just talking about Mamewah atm, I have a little question:
If I change the skin, I have problems with the writing, it is always too big(72).
If I correct that in the settings and put the writing to size 10 and I try to start it, it gives me an error =(
Any way of correcting that problem or do u have a waterproof solution?
thanx a lot !!!
MameWah would then be definatly also my choice!

Not being funny but where are you from?  Some regional settings can cause MAMEWAH problems (esp. with layouts).  Make sure your Decimal Symbol is set to '.' and not ',' for starters (many European countries use ',').

Me.

It happens all the time on the Unreal Tournament clan board I run.
One of our players is a professional writer (amongst her other jobs), I do graphics and typesetting, and a third guy is a proofreader.
Then there's the contingent of people we have who are prone to interpretting any comment directed at them in the worst possible light, and the "I just want to be funny and PRETEND I misunderstood that post" people.

Makes for some great fun when people post ANYTHING that could be misinterpretted.

Alright! a grammatical hair-splitting. I'm in.

The word "version" is inherently a comparitive. Adding the term "shitey" is a descriptive comparison as in "Maximus is a shitey version of Mamewah", which would imply that Mamewah is not shitey. By using the comparitive adjective "shittier" with the comparitive noun "version" you are implying either a second comparison with a 3rd object (X is a shitey version of Mamewah, but Maximus is a shittier version) or a second order of shittiness (Mamewah is shitey and Maximus is a shittier version).  Since only two objects were being discussed, then the implication is that Mamwah is also shitey.  Gregor is correct.

The phrase "an even shittier version of Mamewah," implies at least 3 objects with at least 2 comparisons, which again would be incorrect in this case. For example, "Alaska is an even bigger state than Texas", makes no sense unless we had been discussing a 3rd state.

Sorry to disagree with you here, but one thing about your argument is just plain wrong.  x is shitter than y means that x is worse than y, not that x is bad at all.  Think about it this way, if you asked for someone's opinion about a program, and they thought it sucked, they would say, "don't use 'a', because 'b' is better.  This implies in no way that 'a' is at all good, only that 'b' is more good.  For all intents and purposes 'a' could be the worst program ever, and the previous sentence would not in any way imply a sense of positive worth to program 'a'.  If you want to imply a qualitative value in a comparitive sentence you have to use an adjective that modifies it(e.g.  this is good, but that is better; or alternatively this is sucky, this is better).

and -er suffix words are used only in reference to comparing two things or two groups of things, if three or more things are used, either there is some sort of grouping implied(i.e. A and B are better than C) or two things are being compared then two other things.  the superlative has to be used when making a concurrent comparison of three or more groups -- of A, B, and C, B is the best --  this of course does not imply any value ,of goodness in any sense except that b has more goodness than A or C.
