I think that it would be a very cool idea and I would buy one or make it too!

You could just buy a Beta Brite LED sign (most have a PC serial interface).  I got one for my gameroom (better than a neon sign in my opinion).  It can do multiple colors, animations, and different effects.

I've looked into this but have decided to drop development for three reasons.

#1 Those displays are ugly.

#2 A dual monitor setup with a lcd monitor seems to be a much better solution.

#3 Did I mention that those displays are ugly?
