$75 too much for lexan??
« on: July 30, 2004, 01:01:40 pm »
I just ordered my Lexan from a local glass place and I am being charged $75 for the 2 marquee pieces and the piece for my monitor.

Does that seem too much? I would have bought a 4x8 sheet, but I can't find a place that will sell it too me. I thought Home Depot wwould have it to order, but they didn't. Did I talk to someone at Home Depot that didn't know what they were talking about??

I just feel like $75 is way too much

That seems a little high to me. What thickness did you get?

I bought some acrylic (don't remmber the brand) from Lowe's that was 0.08" for about $12 per 28" x 36" sheet. It's not thick enough for the monitor area but ir works fine for the marquee and my CP.

I'm planning on using galss for the monitor area.

That's very high.

You can get high quality .250" (1/4") thick 24x36 piece at Menards for $25 on sale, $32 regularily, and that would be enough to make the monitor bezel (24x24) and 1 large marquee (24x12). Now that isn't "Lexan" perse, it's the Lucite ES I believe.

Actually, around here, I can get a 22x32" piece of 1/4" TEMPERED glass with rounded corners and sanded round over edges for only $47 complete (e.g. a Ms.Pacman tabletop).  It would be cheaper then for me to get a tempered glass monitor bezel (most likely to scratch and show), probably around $30, and then go with a cheap sheet of .1875 (3/8") plexiglass for $15 or so for my marquees instead of paying someone $75 for lucite.

That's VERY high. I got  a piece big enough to cut in half and sandwich my marquee for $7.00 from home depot. Haven't check the monitor piece, but I'm sure it isn't even HALF of $68....

Yep, too high.

Also, use glass for the monitor. I just order a piece of 3/16" smoked tempered glass for my scratchbuilt spinner/trackball cabinet and it was under $20.

For a monitor cover? wow, THAT is a GOOD deal :)

Well, I DO work in the glass industry, so it is a bit cheaper for me. But that is still me ordering it from another company (who is also ordering it from another company), so you can probably get that price yourself if you look hard enough.

I got my lexan for free;

Went to  the plastics place on a sunday afternoon, the only guy there was pretty well baked and couldn't even be arsed getting out of his chair. So I had a look though the off -uts bin and grabbed what I wanted but didn't have any cash - only credit card.
He couldn't be bothered processing a CC payment and told me to take it and go. So I took it and went. Score!

But $75? ouch!!!!
