Anyone using Mame on a palm PC?
« on: May 08, 2002, 02:07:33 pm »
I'm getting a dirt-cheap Cassiopeia from Ebay this week.  Just wondering if the CE versions of Mame allow mapping buttons to a fold-up keyboard, or use of a mouse.  I'm making a mini-cab for my desk at work, and I'd like to see if I can set up 2-player controls thru a keyboard hack, and maybe a mini spinner.

Thanks

I think MameCE supports a keyboard, but not a mouse.

How old is this Cassiopeia? Any chance of getting the link to the auction you won, to see the price?

It's a Cassiopeia E100 (not made anymore, but works with Mame CE).

Let us know how well you get Mame working on it:

Believe it or not, I was thinking about making a mico cabinet about 6 months ago, and did some initial inqueries on the message boards for the mame ports in these devices about things like this. (even tried to scare up a dreamcast and LCD)

The types of responses I got were:

"Why does it matter whether the start menu shows or not?"
Of course they had no /VISION/ =)

Logically, if this works with good enough speed/sound on
say ms pac-man I would try building a 1 foot high exact
ms pac-man replicate... it would be fun as well as cheaper than
my fullsize cab was

I was hoping to get started hacking it this weekend, but the guy didn't bother sending my Casio until today, even though I paid for it Sunday!

Gah, and I feel bad if I don't get an item off until Tuesday for a Sunday auction.

I think this is considered a collectible and I'm not sure what responce you'd get from hacking it (unless it was broken).

Was looking at the e-100s on ebay and came across a version of mame just for the E-100: http://www.finck.net/mamece-10x/

MameCE3 apparently also works on the E100, and many other palm PCs.  I think it's based off the MameCE 10x code.

BTW, the Coleco game was working when I got it (i.e. it powers up), but it was pretty cheap and some of the labels were missing or badly damaged, and the joysticks are almost unresponsive.  The Colecos are in plentiful supply on Ebay anyway, for maybe double what they cost in the 80's, and the game is the most annoyingly bad version of Pac-Man I've ever seen (the playfield is red, and the ghosts have little pac-mans in them...  I didn't even like it as a kid!  :P )  Anyway, it's mine now, so I don't care if it's collectible or not--get your own!  Heheheh!  At least I'm not gutting Star Wars cabinets or anything....  :o

Anyone else trying this?  I'm planning a 1/4 scale pacman cab with a Cassiopeia E-100.  Anyone have pics of attempts at mini-mame cabs?  For anyone who wants to know here are some games that play well on the PDA:

Pacman, Ms Pacman, etc.
Galaga/Galaxian
Frogger
Crazy Climber
Dig Dug
Mr. Do, and all the clones
All the Donkey Kongs
Mario Bros
Satan's Hollow
Tron
Qix
Zoo Keeper (Woo hoo!)
Joust
Arkanoid
1942
Ghost's n Goblins (Playably fast w sound off)
Congo Bongo
Zaxxon
Bombjack
Yie Ar Kung Fu
Track and Field
Centipede, Millipede
Crystal Castles
Tempest

Joe

Remove NOSPAM from the email for it to work.

Quick question... What kind of framerate are you getting in these games?
Which are the fastest/slowest?  Are you able to push multiple buttons at the same time (i.e. move left/up and shoot simultaneously) or is there key ghosting problems?  How is the sound?

My idea was to use my plans themselves as a template (Since I printed them out on ANSI E paper) to create a cab out of spare wood I had.

but then I decided that using a PocketPC I could go even smaller than
that... another question.. what are the exact screen dimensions on
that E100?

Anyway I have been following Mame on WindowsCE OS, that's the operating system than the Palm Size PC(cassiopeia e-100, e105, e110) and PocketPC's(cassiopeia e125, e200, Ipaq, HP's, Audiobox, Genio etc).  I'm very familiar with the way it behave and the playability.  I have been also thinking of making a micro cab using my PocketPC but I dont want to mess up my Pocket PC.

If you want to play Mame on your casio e-100 don't expect a lot of sound on it.  cassiopeia e-100 has a MIPS processor of 133mhz (if I'm not mistaken it might be less than that) and have difficulties emulating games and creating sounds at the same time.  So the games run faster when you disable the sound.  Few games have been tested to run fairly well on this device and if you want to see it run a bit faster I recommend Darren's port of the MameCE which is located on this link.http://www.finck.net/mamece-10x/.  And to make it even faster you might want to overclock your device up to 184mhz.

Now if you are planning to run Mame on PocketPC 2000 especially casio e125 most game runs pretty playable no matter which version of MameCE you use.  If you want the port that runs most playable game even with sound enable you might want to use Mameboyhttp://205.178.180.124/serbianchaos.net/mameboy/ or if you want variety of games 1000+ check the ever popular MAMECE3 by Techmasterhttp://www.mameworld.net/mamece3/

If you want to see some screen shot of Mame on Pocket PC check my websitehttp://www.geocities.com/mariomags/

I'd hoped that Darren's E10x would work, but his site has suddenly disappeared.

I believe I have the exe file in my computer somewhere.  Let me know if you need it.  The file is about 680kb.  BTW it uses the old version of roms, kinda make the game run a bit faster.

You can also Overclock that Cassiopeia if you want with the use of pencil.

Here's the link to over clock.  It's for an e-115, but it works exactly the same on the e-100:
