Mame32 sound problems (distortion)

Wouldn't you know it the second I get my controls working this happens....

Here's my pertinent specs....

Athlon 2400+
256 megs of ram
Soundblaster PCI 128
MAME32

When I play certain games I'm getting distorted sound that also has a bit of echoing going on. I've fiddled with the sound properties a lot but I can't seem to get it to go away. Sometimes when I restart my comp the first game I play will be fine, but then I'll test something else out and it's distorted and then I'll go back to the first one and that will also be distorted :(

Heard of this before?
