The best spinner
Gradius:
I think I'll discard the idea of building my own spinner. I think it's more sensible to buy one and install it in a box. I've seen these two modes and I don't know which one is better: Slikstick Tornado and Oscar Vortex. The model by Oscar seems to be cheaper. I don't know. Which one would you buy? Which are the pros and cons of each model? I would use it with MAME32 and ArcadeVGA. I have a ps2 port free and also one USB.

Retroblast has reviews of many spinners.

There is a longer (I think) review of the Tornado: http://www.retroblast.com/reviews/tornado.html
Even though the Tornado is expensive I think I'll use that one when I get to building my controls.

I have both an Oscar Vortex & the push-pull. Both work great. I was kind of shocked when I installed the Vortex, it seemed less responsive than the push-pull, but after I adjusted the analog settings, works really great.
The Vortex was much easier to install & takes up less room than the push-pull, and works great. I'll miss my Push-Pull spinner though (I removed it from my main panel to work in my discs-of-tron panel I'm working on. The spin on the push-pull isn't that long, but it has a very authentic feel, and excellent game play.
I've felt the SlikStik tornado, which feels great, but the long spin time is a negative in my book, as it's a little too easy to spin. The slikstik feels good, but I rarely need to let the spinner go in tempest, and come back 2 minutes later to pick up where I left off. A spin of a few seconds is all you need to feel like a spinner is responsive. The slikstik is a bit much. I wish they would have produced a more "average" spinner, I might have bought one. The current expensive tornado model just isn't for me, though.

Why not build one ?
I am in the process of building a cross between "thenastys-spinner" and http://www.gearheadlabs.com/spinner/
My cost is under $12 ..not inccluding an old mouse to hack. It's not finished yet but I am fairly cconfident that it will work fairly smooth.
The reason I am building mine is there aren't that many spinner games that I play and I could see spoending all that money ...maybe I am just cheap. ::)
Just my 2 cents

The SlikStik has a very small 2" footprint which is helpful if you have alot of controls on your CP.
