I thought the turntable was just a fancy mechanism for hitting one of two (clockwise/counter-clockwise) switches. As long as the turntable is moving, the button is 'pressed'. --- End quote --- If that is so, then chances are it is not properly emulated in MAME. Like SNK rotary sticks are treated as dials I believe, but do not use optics... --- End quote --- I'm just going by what I've observed while playing beatmania/hiphopmania in MAME. I've only had the chance to play it in arcades a few times. When the subject of beatmania as a spinner game came up, I just knew that mame treated the turntable as buttons and not a spinner. Someone who has experience with the actual arcade hardware would likely know for sure. -Kevin --- End quote --- It's very likely that MAME uses either buttons or spinner input for this. For example, in Arkanoid, you can move the VAUS with either the buttons or the dial input. In Ikari, you can use either the mouse (dial) or buttons for rotation. I imagine Beatmania is similar, although I haven't looked at it in MAME and have no idea how the actual arcade game works. |

For example will the spinner allow me to scroll up/down and select a game in the list? Or would I have to use one of the joystick CPs to use the FE? --- End quote --- Depends how your frontend works and to some extent how your spinner is hooked up - If your frontend allows you to use a mouse to scroll vertically, then a spinner hooked to the Y-Axis will work. However, you might have to re-configure MAME since games like arkanoid are probably set to use an X-axis spinner. In addition, if your frontend doesn't allow re-mapping of it's input buttons (or if you have different buttons selected for your main panel), you might have to load one codeset in your encoder for front-end use, and then swap this with a different codeset when MAME loads, and then back when MAME exits. Lots of work, but possible. |

Currently undecided on which FE to use - currently thinking about using MameWAH. Any recommendations? The only thing with MameWAH is that it doesn't allow different emulators in the same game list - or am i wrong??? basically i would like all playble games listed in a single list (mame, espxe, daphne,pc games). it should support both horiz and vert displays. ideally it would support joystick, TB and spinner control operation. --- End quote --- Speaking for MAMEWAH: it doesn't support PC joysticks, or mouse devices atm. And no, emulators can not be merged into one list :( Both are on my todo list - PC joystick & mouse support is high on my priorities (I am making my analog stick/spinner/trackball panel atm), but merging of emulators is not, since it requires a lot of core re-writing :P So from what you've said you might be better off with a different FE - I'm sure Dragon King can do what you want... |

just to clarify: when i say joystick - i mean arcade joystick wired through an IPAC (so that would be basically using the cursor keys). |

The game is basically an update of Tempest, and includes a classic control mode which should be perfect for a spinner - I'll be trying it in a day or 2... :) |
