help! color bleeding and scrolling bars with ArcadeVGA
« on: May 27, 2004, 09:35:25 pm »
Help!!!

I have just connected up my ArcadeVGA to my Hantarex
MTC EQ/2 video monitor using the Scart connector (with
composite sync).

I am getting disapointing quality of display.

When I am playing a mame game i get regular
transparant horizontal bars travelling up the screen approx
every 1 second. See attached file scrollingbar.jpg

I also see a lot of "bleeding" of the colors and white
horizontal lines where the should not appear(both in
winxp and mame) please see attached files
colorbleed.jpg and slugbleed.jpg

when i am in windows i also get a lot of interference
patterns on white areas of the screen. when i move the
mouse i also get screen disruptions (many vertical
lines are displayed that scroll up the screen).

Any ideas why this is happening - it seems to happen
in every resolution that i try.

i also have a RGBI input to the monitor so I will try
and make up a D9 connector and test behavior (it has
seperate V and H sync connections). Do you think I
will get better results with that?

I am wondering if there is a issue with my monitor?
any ideas? It is a Nantarex MTC EQ/2 video monitor that supports
PAL/NTSC/SECAM signals. So figured it would be ok to use in a cab as supports Scart and RGB inputs.

http://www.hantarex.co.uk/pdf/MTCEQ3.pdf

i am able to connect my playstation to the monitor
using Scart and get good a display (except for some
image ghosting please see for info http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=19333
).  With the AVGA i do not get any ghosting so figure
that issue was with the PSX and/or the Scart
connection lead it uses.

I really hope samebody can provide some advice on this as
it is really not acceptable quality of display at the
moment to put in a cab. are there any adjustments i could make on the monitor?

BTW - i am running on Win XP Pro

regards,
richard

i did some more testing tonight.

when i connected to my Panasonic TV using Scart
connection it worked perfectly. so proves that the
AVGA is OK. it gives a great display on the TV.

i tweaked around trying to get it to work with the
Hantarex monitor. I found that if i reduce the
brightness setting nearly right down to minimum in the
ATI display control panel settings the color bleeding problem is
resolved. The only downside is that the whole display
is too dark. any ideas why this might happen? are the
voltages too high for the monitors scart input? how
can i increase the screen brightness without getting
the bleeding return?

i tried adusting the pot on the monitor that seems to
control the brightness but it didn't seem to work as
expected, the screen either went dark or gray with
white scanlines visible.

i think i will still try and test with the D9 RGB
analogue input. it accepts 5V inputs like regular
arcade monitor and has seperate H & V syncs. So a video amp will be needed to be used.

i still am seeing the scrolling transparant bar
appearing in some mame games. In others games there is
a visible flickering effect of the screen. I am
wondering if this is because the FPS of the games are
so high and the software is not synced to the screens
vertical refresh. What do you think? are there
settings in mame that might improve the flickering?
currently i am using mame out of the box so it is auto
selecting the screen resolution. this seems to only happen in mame, it is not general windows display issue.

There is only flickering in Windows when using 680 x
480 resolution (this is to be expected as interlaced). 680 x 240 is
fine.

thanks for your help on this.

Did you get the video amp?

If so remove it.
If not get one.

I was having troubles like that with a k7000 series 25" monitor until I added the video amp.

Later,

the control i was adjusting was "screen".

I was able to get good display after adjusting the brightness, colour and contrast pots.

seems that the flickering issue has also been fixed asfter running the AdvanceVGA Mame Resolution tool to ensure all games run in an authentic resolution.
