Personally, I think the Omni-Stik (or Euro-Stick) is a better choice for 4-way games than the J-Stick.  What I've read of the J-Stick is long travel, light spring pressure, and ability to hit diagonals (occasionally).  All bad for 4-way games.  Some people swear by them, though.

I'm planning to have a Ultimarc J-Stick as a 4 way on my CP...
and I have mounted 1 of them on a joystick box in the meantime...

if you rotate the bottom template to 4 way... there is no way you can hit the diagonal....

whether its loose or tight... short or long travel... I guess that's personal preference...

I do like them a lot... (for 4 way)... and its ball top look too....

Fair enough.

Apollo:

For what you say you want to play I would go for a WICO 8 way leaf stick and a MsPac/Galag reunion 4 way from Happ.

thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm going to go for Supers for the 8-Way and the Ms.Pacman Galaga for the 4-Way :)

patrickl:

I have a MsPac/Galaga repro stick, but it's kinda short and a Wico 4-way leaf feels better to me.

For the MsPac/Galaga repro you'll probably need the mounting plate (which makes it expensive) and it takes some work with a router to mount it (nicely) in a wooden panel. The Wico 4 way can be mounted just like any other stick.
