Original machine with mame inside

Edgedamage:

If someone was to take a original cabinet and replace the dead original boards and replace them with a comp. But still keep the outside of the cab original. How does that sound?

seibu:

Well, if the boards are definitely dead, and the outside of the cab / the monitoir / the controls etc. remain totally untouched, then it's really a kind of restoration job - with the added advantage that you can play other games on the cab too (within the limitations of the original control panel, of course)

menace:

I was thinking of doing this for my next project--on the outside it looks like an original but with swappable panels for mame useage--I just have to find a suitable original cab now for a good price.  I wish I could have talked demon-seed into a trade--ah well.

SirPeale:

Sure, it's what I'm doing with my Galaxian.

paigeoliver:

I have seen that done quite a bit.

Good candidates include
all vectors
70s black and white titles (many are really rare, and boardsets are largely unavailable for these games).
Anything with a $200+ boardset.
Games like Berzerk with battery acid issues.

I personally own a Defender that this has been done to. I will be going that route with my Amazing Maze now that it has been "de-mamed".

I also own several other possible candidates for this (Sprint 2, Stargate, Atari Basketball, Battlezone, etc).
