My friends and I stumbled across that game one night. Man it got pretty crazy after that. lol, we had a lot of fun.

Hmm,  was watching 'The Last Starfighter'  tonight on HBO.

I noticed a line in the movie where Centari said that he 'designed and built the game'

Which made me think...  Centari = Centuri  ?  Heh   Maybe a even combination of centuri and atari?  heh

So I fired up mame and looked under Centuri's games for kicks.  I noticed a game that I had never played:

 "Aztarac"

  An interesting Vector game.

I tried to work it... but couldnt get the controls.   Did a few searches, and found some california extreme control panel pics.   It used a tron style joystick - but looks to use an optical interface.  Basically,  and analog stick that didnt seem to use a centering mechanism.  The other control was a spinner... and a few buttons.

Even after finding out what controls the game used... it was tricky to make the mame32 varient assign the correct values.   I had to keep trying the same things over and over untill it liked me : )   Finally, I got to play : )

Use an analog stick or analog gamepad control to move your ship (you may have to reverse some of the axis as well).   You use the mouse/spinner to aim your laser turret.

You must protect 4 bases from enemy crashes.   Once you clear enough enemies.. you can move into the center of the bases to warp to another level.

The game is trippy - esp the title screen.  Looks pretty cool... but I couldnt play it too well, as I was trying to use a mouse as the spinner... and the game moves way to fast for that! : )

Ohh, and one other interestic thing... its front plexi that sits over the monitor - was a half dome (convex - pointed twords you).   That must have made the thing look even more trippy.

I'll have to check it out again to be sure (I was young), but I had some great times when I rented Home Alone for the NES. You picked up traps and laid them as you ran around the house as the 2 burglars chased you. Think of it as a G-rated Tecmo's Deception

Someone has way too much free time.

Thanks for sharing though! I printed out your post so I can check out the game later -- sounds complicated.
