1" Thick Cocktail Top
jcrouse:
Where are you guys finding 1" thick material for the top of your cocktail cabinets. I don't want to have to put two pieces of 1/2" together if I don't have to.
Thanks,
John
crsdawg:
i've heard others have had to make a special order for it from their suppliers(lowes, home depot?). personally 2 pieces of 1/2" seems like a good alternative. screw them together and once you slot it and install t-molding you will never know the difference.
another option is to just use 3/4" which is still plenty strong, just not an accurate repo.

I agree with crsdawg, 2 pieces glued or screwed together would be just fine.
I just assumed my cocktail top was 2 pieces of 1/2 inch layered together, but upon closer inspection it is indeed 1 inch..or a very consistent tight glue job (which you indeed could achieve with clamps and screws).

Check your local information place (phone book, in the USA) for "Lumberyards" or "Lumber". The lumberyard can and will get you the piece you desire. It is their business! Some may not cut to your dimensions, so remember that when searching around. Your sweet honey-like tone will go a long way towards getting what you want from someone you've never dealt with.
If you want/need something exotic, go to Rockler and you'll be able to get something that thick. Be prepared to reach through your nose to access your wallet, as that's how expensive their wood is.
If you want cheap, and are thinking plywood, MDF, or some other sheet-good, you can do it easier than you think. A little Gorilla glue, a few clamps, and a few cauls (ask me if you go this route, I'll explain what a caul is and why you SHOULD use one) and you're in bidness! It's not as hard as you might be envisioning, and you won't even require screws in it.

I used 3/4" and then got some of the heavy duty 1/8" felt pads at Home Depot. I then put felt on both the top and bottom of my glass clips which then has the added bonus of not scratching up the paint on the top or the glass :)
