How does one install T-nuts?

I think I'm going to use some big T-nuts to attach my side panels to the frame.  How does one install them, though?  Do I just drill the hole for the shaft, countersink a tiny bit for the base and then use a hammer to pound those little spikies in?  It's the spikies that really have me confused.  They look too big to try to pull in just by screwing a bolt in the other side like I would to pull the squre part of a carriage bolt into the hole.

edit: spelling

FractalWalk:

That's exactly what I did.

Ken Layton:

Yes, they need to be pounded in with a hammer.

shmokes:

Cool, thanks guys.  It looked like that would be the way to do it, but I spent WAY too long shaping those side panels to screw them up doing something stupid.

Tailgunner:

Hammering them in works for the spiked T-nuts, though given a choice I buy the screw in type instead. Those have three holes in the backing flange and attach to the panel with wood screws.
