Old microsoft mechanical (no encoder wheel) mouse problem

So, I got ahold of an old microsoft mouse.  The ones with the potentiometer lookin' things in it.  
I'm using it for a stand-alone-spinner-nothing-better-to-do project.  I've got it mounted so the knob is directly connected to the shaft of one of the spinners.  
My problem is that you have to spin it a whole lot to have the desired effect in mame.  Yes, I can adjust the analog settings in mame to make it work better, but I'm looking for a more system wide solution so when I get a real spinner I don't have to go back and change all the settings on all the games I played.
So if you've used one of these types of mouse, or you just have a suggestion on how to accomplish this, please let me know.  It's just not the same with a mouse...

Are you using in Pure DOS, if so try using CUTEMOUSE as the driver. I believe it has a command line switch parameter to make it more sensitive (something to that effect).

Nope, not using dos.

I'm considering using a pully or gear system, but am unsure what gear ratio to use.  It takes 5 rotations to get from one side of windows to the other with no changes to any mouse settings.  So if anyone could tell me how many rotations it takes for real spinners to get from one end to the other, that might help.

What resolution is your screen at for the 5-across number?

Think about using lego gears.

Good idea on the lego gears though.  Unfortunatly I don't have legos any more.  But if anyone out there wants to send me a couple you could just put it in an envelope and it'll only cost a stamp.

Not that anyone will acctually be willing to send me their lego gears, but just in case... PM me for the address.
