Here is a write up of how to build one of this.

Here are the tools used:

A. Torx #8
B. Torx #6
C. 6/32 Threader (use to made thread under the spinner).
D. 3/16 wrench
E. Phillip Screwdriver
F. Flathead Screwdriver
G. Long Nose Plier
H. Dremel

this are the parts needed

A. Mouse (PS2 or Serial) I think USB are all optical.
B. "L" Bracket (dollar store)
C. This nuts are from the Video Card, Sound card, etc..
D. This nut came the Computer Case you bought before.
E. This Shrink Wrap.

Misc Items not listed:
1. Epoxy
2. Blow Dryer (for the shrink wrapper)

Now you need to get one of this Western Digital Hard Drives. And open it up using the TORX #8 and #6. So you should have this.

C. This nuts are from the Video Card, Sound card, etc..

Now time to cut this a little shorter to make the a shaft.
Using the Dremel (carefull with this) and cut off about 1/2 of the thread.

After cutting 4 of this, take attach them to each other using the 3/16 wrench and put some Epoxy to make it better grip.

Now after that step, take the swrink wrapper and wrap aaround the nuts about 3 1/2 piece (not all 4 nuts) and heat it up using a blow dryer (make sure its hot).

Now use the 6/32 THREADER and thread the bottom of the SPINNER so we can screw the Letter D - This nut came the Computer Case you bought before.

And this is how it is ....

A. is the 4 nuts thats been cut and shrink wrap.
B. this is screwed in there using the 6/32 THREADER using the GOLDEN nut from the computer case.

Now you need to cut the PLATTER disk from the Hard Drive and drill 4 holes on the sides.

using the Hack saw......
Cut the "L" to make one end shorter.
Glue the "L" into the CUT Disk Platter.

Put the Platter pieces together.
Hack the mouse and cut the housing of the mouse (hacksaw).
Glue the mouse into the "L".
Glue the WHEEL into the GOLD NUT that was screwed on the bottom of the SPINNER.

Your Done. ! ! ! !

Use more of the Silver nut that came from the Video Card, Sound card etc... to make adjustments of the SPINNER TOP.

I'm missing something here. Where is the green spinner knob from? I re-read this carefully, but I fear I'm now looking SO hard that it's blinding me to the obvious. Please point me in the right direction, as I would like the option to have a knob to match my CP, and it seems like that could be accomplished by the manufacturer of that knob.

UPDATE: I am now building a "Quick Bunny Top" for this Spinner. This is your temporary or permannet TOP untill you decide to buy one and replace it. You might not even want to replace it once you try it.

You might want to super glue some big washers to the bottom of the spinner to act as a flywheel, otherwise the spinning action is too light.

Just picked up a brand new USB mouse for $3cdn and it's not optical.

So if you're looking for one, they're out there.

Here is how to BYO Bunny Spinner Top.

Tools Needed

A. Quik Milk Chocolate (Drink it while making one of this)
B. Drawer Knob
C. 3/8 Nut
D. 3/8 Set Screw
E. 3/8 DIE
F. Final Piece what it looks like (Epoxy in the inside)
G. Final Finish product filled w/Bondo (not pictured)
H. Allan-Wrench
Misc not pictured.
Drill w/Drill Bits
3/8 Tap (See pic at bottom).

First take the Drawer Knob and 3/8 die and make a 3/8 thread.

Then Take the 3/8 Nut and screw it in.

Then Take 3/8 Drill Bit and make a hole in the 3/8 Nut (see pic)

While your at it, make the hole bigger in the center of the Drawer knob until you get a size of 1/4 (this is for the shaft).

Then take you 3/8 Tap and make a thread inside the NUT.

Once Thread is made, screw in the 3/8 Set Screw w/Allan wrench.

Last drill a HOLE on the side of the Bunny TOP for the Alan wrench so you can screw the SET Screw when the Spinner Shaft is installed.

Glue (Epoxy) the Drawer Knob inside the Bunny Top and let dry, then fill it w/Bondo for weight.

I recently tore up a hard drive to get the bearing in the middle, was contemplating some options

One of the write-ups I saw had some elaborate combination of rods and washers and glue and stuff to make the threaded piece that fits the knob and attaches to the spinner guts

What I found that worked REAL good was one of the finger-tighteners from a monitor cable. On the plug end youve got your 15pin d-sub connecter and 2 posts on either side that thread into the hex's on the video card. The threading was exactly right for the center of the bearing, and the plastic knob part was perfect to slide the knob over

FYI, I tore apart a Maxtor HD and it did not work. Forget the model # at home.

This idea has got me thinking...I am working on finding parts to fit a threaded rod. It seems like that would be a little beefier and stronger. You could also use bigger bearings. Home Depot had rods in 1/4" and all other diameters.

My kids are going to be using the cab and I have to make it as kid-proof as possible.

I am also trying to find parts that are available to everyone.

Did not have much luck the other night at Home Depot...the quest continues...

I made my spinner using parts that I got at Ace Hardware. I used a 6" long 1/4" carriage bolt. It was cheaper than the threaded rod.

All of the hard are in these pictures came from Ace hardware.

1 6"long 1/4" carriage bolt (head cut off).
2 flanged ball bearings.
2 bronze sleeve bearings (to reduce the 3/8" hole in the ball bearings to 1/4")
4 large fender washers for fly wheel
4 nuts to fit carriage bolt
1 Black knob with set screw.

I might have to look into the Bunny Knob, I like how quirky it is!

Yep, that's what I was thinking.
Just got to find the bearings now. With good bearings and a good size flywheel, it should spin nicely.

Ace has a nice selection of bearings. They had realy nice sealed ones, but they were about $18.00 each. I went with the much cheaper ones that were not sealed. They were heavily packed with grease, but a few shots of a spray silicone lubricant cleaned them up nicely. The spin eally smoth too.

What about the encoder wheel? Did you make it or buy it?

Just thought I would post on theNasty's spinners as I had him whip me up a couple. Plugged one into the serial port of the PC I'll be using in a planned cab (DOS 6.22 and DOS MAME v36 or v53) and played some Arkanoid, Championship Sprint and a couple of others. After adjusting the speed/sensitivity the spinners work just fine. Used the Q-Bunny tops he made and they are certainly different and will lend a unique appeal to your cab, however, they are just a tad lopsided, nothing that affects gameplay at all and not noticeable unless you just sit there and stare at your spinner while twirling it back and forth

All in all, I give 'em a thumbs up and well worth the money, especially since I didn't have to spend the time scrounging for the parts and putting 'em together. Thanks again theNasty!

The encoder was hand made.

I printed out the encoder wheel from the Cheep Spinner instructions and glued it to a sheet of thin styrene plastic using a spray adhesive. Then I cut the outer cirle using a pair of scisoors. I cut the teeth by hand using an Exacto knife. Drill a hole in the center and your done.

I want to build my own spinner like this, I have the hard drive and some of the other hardware, my question is, where the HECK do you find a #6 and #8 Torx drivers? I've looked everywhere...Home Depot, Lowes, Radio Shack, local Hobby Stores...am I missing somewhere? Thanks for any help, and thank you all for making this place a fantastic resource.

Radio Shack should have them Bring your HD with you when you go so you can test it right there. I bought mine in a Electronic Shop.

Can you provide details of the pcb bit of you spinner (assume it is a optical detector of some sort) ?

i have an ultimarc opti-pac would it connect to it directly? or would some extra electronics be required.

Got my Torx drivers at Sears.

Oh yeah, Nannuu & I also finally got around to installing Nasty's spinner. Replaced the bunny knob with the knob that Bob Roberts sells, and it works really well. Only problem was the L bracket came unglued so it had to be re-epoxied on.
