List of Games with various controllers - Games to Try
« on: March 16, 2004, 05:36:07 pm »
Idea:

Every once awhile, people post a list of the good non-traditional games that they play on their cabinet.  I usually read this list and say, "I have to try that game out."  And when I get around trying that game out.  I usually forget what game I was looking for to try out.  And I can't find that post that listed the games to try.  Since the topics on the main forum move so fast.

So what I suggest:

Sticky this post under the "Everything Else" and people can either post a list of the non -traditional games they play or even easier past a link to the posting that had that list of good games to try out.

Example:  This post has a listing of some 4 player party games that I've never heard and have never tried

http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=17154

Here's a post that talks about 4 Player Simultaneous Games

http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=16101

Here's a post that talks about the "Dreamcast games must haves"

http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=9984

Post regarding "Multiple 4 ways games"

http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=16325

So if people could just post their list of games that the majority of the people don't normally play or link to an older post.  Other people may enjoy a "new" game that they never even heard off.

Thanks

Sounds like a good idea.  If it tanks, we can always kill it and unsticky it.  Moving...NOW!

Let's make it work.

I believe that thread, howard, is more aimed toward non-mame games, while this one is more about mame.

I could be wrong on this, so feel free to correct me.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I actually posted this in the Software forum, but Peale switched it here.

This is for the MAME game lists that usually get posted in the Main Forum section and I just wanted a place to bookmark those posts.

Also a place for people to post what other "non-traditional" games they play.

Hopefully this works.

I just got my track ball...and I have to say a trackball game that I had never even heard of before called "Ataxx" is really excellent.

The AI is great and I find it to be really challenging.

It's very similar to Othello (remember that?) but a lot harder. I also like that when your computer opponent makes a particularly good move it laughs at you. I really like that goading into trying to beat the AI.

Lately I've been playing a lot of Shuuz and Shuffleshot.  Both great trackball games.  And I have to agree with Mr. Do...what a great simple game.

Gotta try "The Speed Rumbler"...Capcom was ahead of their time with this one.  When your car catches fire, you can jump out of it and try to survive on foot with a shotgun and a somersault roll/dodge type manuever.  Stay alive long enough, and your people bring you in a new car to get into into.  Nothing is more satisfying than hopping out of your flaming heap, running around nilly willy trying to stay alive with guys shooting at you and cars trying to run you over to finally make it to your new ride and give those bastardds what they came for...SWEET!! ;D

Plus, there is a time limit that keeps it's time even if you continue, so the pressure is still on even though credits are not a factor.

If Capcom had only let you steal enemy cars...this would have been Grand Theft Auto's great-great-grandad!

I was just stuck on the P's tonight.  I played Penguin Brothers and Penguin-Kun Wars.  I thought they were kinda fun.

Penguin Brothers is kind of like bomber man combined with bubble bobble.

In Penguin-Kun Wars, you throw balls at eachother and whoever has least balls on their side after the time expires wins.  That description may sound really bad, but give it a try...it was alright.

Midnight Riders is a great game, a little cheesy but loads of fun.   ;D
Chuck Norris was originally in Street Fighter II, but was removed by Beta Testers because every button caused him to do a roundhouse kick. When asked about this "glitch," Norris replied "What Glitch?"

A friend recently referred me to a game called Outfoxies. Seems like a pretty cool game, but I haven't been able to try it on real arcade controls (just keyboard).

I bought a Megazone board on ebay recently and I just keep playing it and playing it.

Hadn't spotted this thread before, but I like it...

My favorite game which I never heard of --BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type-- mame is probably Snake Pit.  The trackball & stick combo is a great touch imo.

Another fun one from Sente is Off The Wall, similar controls but spinner & stick.  I find the guys' arms pretty amusing  :D

Happ makes a mechanical rotary joy, they can be had used for less than the LS-30.  Wico used to make some, too, they pop up on ebay once in a while.  There are also optical rotary sticks out there, and the diy rotarys that Shape D. linked to are optical as well.  Optical rotarys can be used to play mechanical rotary games, although some (including myself) don't think they feel right.  Mechanical rotarys will not play optical rotary games, or at least will not play them well.

Here's a list of rotary games I put together out of a long older thread.:

kari Warriors
Victory Road
Heavy Barrel
Gondomania
Bermuda Triangle
Time Soldiers
Guerilla War
SAR - Search And Rescue
Downtown
Legendary Wings
Victory Road
Midnight Resistance
Ikari III - The Rescue
Exterminator
TNK III
Touchdown Fever
Caliber 50 (used optical rotary sticks, wouldn't play well if at all with mechanicals)

I make no claim as to the accuracy or completeness of this list, like I say, I just put it together from an earlier thread.  corrections/additions welcomed!

Optical rotary sticks like the ones used on Cal .50, and the Build-Your-Own project sticks found on this board connect through an Opti-Pac, mouse hack, or other such stuff, same as a spinner.

Mechanical rotary sticks can connect through the Druin's interface , or can be connected directly through your keyboard encoder if you use MAME Analog+.  Direct connection uses up 12 extra inputs on your encoder per stick, but provides the most accurate game play.  Direct connection is only working for some games (so far).

re: Xybots

Xybots sometimes gets listed as a rotary game, but it used a unique Twist-To-Turn stick.  The stick did not rotate, but could be twisted a little ways- then it would spring back to center when you stopped twisting.  Twist right and let go once, and your charachter turned 90 degrees to the right.  Repeat, and you've turned 180 degrees.. and so on.  You could get Xybots working fine with a mechanical rotary and a Druins, or using "Rotate Right" and "Rotate Left" buttons, or even an original Xybots stick- but I don't think it would work very well with an optical rotary.

I did it like a month ago.  Looks like someone else wanted it stickied again.  Was trying to clean the 'sticky clutter' we seem to get.

Tony Hawk is one of the few games that I have played a lot of when I was a lot younger but it was only recently, right when the PS3 era has gone up, when I have seen probably one of the most bizarre controllers for a video game I have ever seen.

And true enough, it has contributed to a lot of smashed tv sets and a lot of broken bones while being played.
