bah, I've been so disappointed with how the stained grain looks that I haven't done much but move it into my garage and look at it like I hate it every time I see it.  :)

I need to poly it and then just start working on the CP.

It could be finished in a week if I wasn't so pissed at it.

I'll try to finish her up just for you thouhg.  ;)

Allroy

I'm sure it will still look good when it's finished, after all when a cab is not finished it doesn't look half as good as it does when its finished!

Well, Thanks to Gary!  :D

I've started working on the POS cab again.  I got some of that 3/4" veneer edging in White Birch.  So, thanks to like 50' of that stuff, the cab actually looks a little better.  I had to iron it all on and get it looking okay, then I stained it and it's actually looking better!  I'll post pics when there's real progress to make.

I'm gonna let the stain set for a few days, then I'll start the polyurithaning.  Then it's off to San Jose for the Classic Gaming Expo!  I can't wait!  David Crane is gonna be there!!!  HOW COOL IS THAT!?!?

Allroy

P.S. - Gary, thanks for bumping the thread back up and making me remember that I had that cab taking up space in the garage!

Alright, I've got a problem....
When I started the cab I based the dimentions off this crappy 25" Zenith TV with a Coax in.  Somewhere along the way I was able to pick up a nice 27" Panasonic with S-vid and Component video inputs for a great price of $50.  I had measured it a bunch of times to make sure it would fit, but was building the cab in the basement, with a final destination of upstairs and I didn't want to be carrying that TV up and down the stairs.

Anyway, now that it's in the Garage, it's not such a long or difficult trip.  Last night I decided to put it in the cab.  The top fits no problem.  It's close, but it fits.  The thing I never noticed is that the TV case actually gets slightly wider at the bottom.  and just in the front.  Not Good.

so...now I'm not sure what to do. Any ideas?  I guess I could take the TV tube out of the case, but how do I mount it?  it's only like and 1/8" off on each side. I could try to shave the plastic off on the TV...but that creeps me out.  I dunno.  Any ideas?

Phew!  Never mine on the Help...i guess I figured something out.  For some reason (maybe the wood will give a little higher up or whatever) I put in some 2x4s and put SQUEEZED the TV into the cab.  Check out this fit:

Anyway, you can see the veneer I put on too in this pic.

See ya!

I don't know if you want to hear this at this point or not but  you know that the birch plywood that you got is most likely birch/maple. One face is birch and one face is maple. If you look at each side you'll notice that they are infact different woods.

I've never heard of such a thing - mixed woods plywood. What is very common is to use different grades on the two faces, and also to mix cuts - radial cut on one side and plane slice on the other. These will look quite different.

That's right!  Actual progress IS being made!

Tonight (yes, just tonight) I installed the Keyboard drawer and cut out the monitor bezel and was VERY releaved to find out that my measuring wasn't completly off.   This just means I have more sanding and staining and everything to do.   ::)

Here are the pics to prove it

Gonna be working on it a lot more here for a while I hope.

See?  I said I'd be working on it and making progress.  :D

Here are some pictures of the drawer in progress.  Stolen off a drawer on my son's desk, the hinges cause a slight gap when the front is closed, but when it's open it lays down perfectly flat, and won't kill the wrists.  I just thought it'd be cooler this way.  :D

Oh, and the stain was VERY freshly applied...you'll notice some pooling but that's been cleaned up.  ;)

Ya'know, I see nothing wrong with your cabinet.  It looks very well done even at this stage.  The veneer edgebanding looks good too, and hides the fact that the sides are plywood nicely.  Don't quit now, you're almost there!!!

Thank you very much!  actually it's nearly impossible to get good pictures of this cab.  It seems to look different from every angle.  Some good, some bad.  The light (of both the flash and just the room light) affect it greatly.  It's a very interesting piece of work.  I got the drawer hardware finished up tonight.  I just need to get to mounting the USB ports and the Paralell Ports (for NES and SNES controllers)wired up to those slots in the back of the drawer.  Anyway, it looks nice with this slick black handle I found.  I'll post more pics when I feel it appropriate (soon).  :)

Thanks again

Well, ya know...the Arcade is in the basement.

it's not original blah blah it's not original...it's nice looking.  The wife will let me have it on the main floor.  It was a chance to do something different.  If you want original go to the basement and play one of my pac man cabs, or a PINBALL machine for goodness sake.

Anyway...I like it more each day.  Won't ever like it as much as my first with the obnoxious 80's colors...but...I like this one.  And I made it for me.  Well, me and my family.  ;)

alright, not TOO much done tonight...but I did go get another pinball machine!  It's called StratoFlite or something like that.  It's an old Williams pin.  Sweet.  Nice gift from the in laws.  :D

Here are some pics of the cab as it stands though..as well as a picture of the inside of the drawer again, showing how it works a little better.

Neato huh?

NICE!  Even the bezel's wood, eh?  I'm surprised no one's (as far as I know) built a furniture-type jukebox yet.  That would look nice.  A bit off-topic question for you; since you have some pinball machines, how much does a decent-condition pinball go for, anyway?  Kinda curious is all...

I got a Bride of Pinbot for $1000, a Black Knight 2000 for $1600 a Mr. & Mrs. Pac-Man Pinball for $500, a 1957 (I think) Majorettes and the Strato Flite for free.  So....it really changes a lot on what machine it is.  some are very collectable or whatever...like..I don't think I've seen a South Park pin for under $2000 in any condition.  That's the one I really want.  ;)

starting soon!  gotta figure out the design that I'm going to have laser etched into the control Panel.  I think i'm going to go with Quarter/timeline idea.  I made a post a while back asking what people thought were the most important years of Arcade history....so i think I'm going to do something where there's a quarter from 1972 and a line coming down from it and some text saying "Pong becomes first arcade game"  then a 1980 Quarter and a line with something like:
"Pac-Man
Missle Command
Defender
Centipede
Bezerk"

You get the idea.  Maybe Mark 1986 as the year Nintendo made video games cool again with the NES and go from like 1972 - 1992 when Mortal Kombat came out.

You get the idea.  I just need to create a Jpg to get to the laser people so I can get a quote.  I might make a new thread for that to get input from folks.  I won't put every game on there...obviously...but I'd like to get all of my favorites.

What do you think?

yep...i had read your thread and think your cabs look good too. I didn't think you were saying you didn't like it.  I was just shutting anyone down who wanted to come in and say "wood cabs suck cuz I've never seen one in an arcade" or whatever people complain about.

They weren't that hard on your cabs.  It seemed like there were maybe 2 that were kinda rough on you...but those guys sucked anyway.  ;)

I don't know...something like this.

http://www.pac-mat.com/images/MAMEII/ControlPanelfortheboard.jpg

ya know?

I might just drop the 1971 (although I do think it's important) and just do the 80s.  I hate to leave mortal Kombat out, but I'm running out of space.

I didn't forget it....I cut it for space reasons!  the CP is only 30 (approx) inches wide.

If anyone who's good at this stuff wants to try to design something for me, that'd be okay with me.  :D

Umm......errr....uhhh   ::)

soon....very soon.
I've bee busy with another project that's sitting incomplete....both are like 90%

the other will be very cool.  I did finally build the PC for this one though....I just need to decide what to do with the control panel.  I was going to do a timeline, but...that seems like a lot to do....

SOON though...for sure.  :)

WEEEEE..HE..HELL....it's certainly been a while.  Over 120 days according to the message in red above what I'm typing.  I never finished this cabinet and FINALLY deceided it NEEDS to be finished.

Control Panels are just SUCH a pain in the ass, aren't they?  especially when you plan on doing something strange?  anyway....I posted a few questions in the http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=48520.0 to ask a few questions about the (in my mind) complex nonsense I'm doing with this control panel.

The idea is to mount the joysticks to the bottom of the control panel but have the top 1/4" of the CP be an epoxy goo that solidifies to look like glass.  I'm sure you've seen this effect on Bar tops and table tops at some point in your life.  I finally got around to pouring the CP the other day and just drilled all my button holes last night.

Here are some pics.  Feel Free to comment.

Marquee

As I beleive I mentioned at some point in this thread, to get it in the upstairs part of the house, I had to make it look like furniture and it helped that I said I'd make it kinda..family oriented.  Thus:  The marquee will change every year, reflecting events of the previous year.  So, this year, We're the Davis Family Arcade 2005.

We spent a lot of time in Disney World (that's where we got married) so there are quite a few pics of us there.
