Good Games
« on: March 15, 2004, 06:41:57 pm »
This seems like the sort of thing that has been posted already, but I couldn't find anything so here goes...

What are good games in your opinions? The point of this is to get ideas for games to play, since there are thousands of mame roms and a lot of garbage.

I like games that require a lot of skill, because I played PC games forever and they require no skill in single player (who wants to pay $40-80 for something you can't beat I guess). And to get far in competetive multiplayer games takes too much dedication and time. In no particular order:

1. Joust (*) <-- can't buy levels here!
2. Jumpman (*)
4. Bubble Bobble (**)
5. Bomberman (**)
6. Street Fighter Alpha 3 (*,**)
7. Metal Slug (**)
8. Excitebike (NES only maybe, but fun)
9. Track and Field (***)
10. Golden Axe (**)
11. Crazy Climber (***)
12. Defender (***)
13. [overview plane games with lots of gunfire] (**)

* - game requiring skill
** - especially fun with friends; buy the win sometimes
*** - haven't really played but looks good

Just tell me if I'm redundant.

Galaga, Robotron and Puzzle Bobble 2 should keep you busy for a while.

Once you actually learn how to play Do! Run Run, then it will suck you in.

Remember, in that game there are 6 goals going on at the same time.

Picking up all the pellets to advance the level.
Drawing squares to advance the pellets.
Throwing balls at all the monsters.
picking up pellets to get your ball back.
trying to spell EXTRA
trying to roll logs over monsters

Then on top of that the different elevations within the levels change things up a bit too.

Most classic games tend to only have 2 or 3 gameplay components. Compare to Galaga with 2 things to do (shoot ships, get ship captured), or Invaders with one thing to do. Dig Dug has 3 components (rocks, shooting, and those bonus vegetables that appear from time to time).
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

My personal facvorites are:

Out Run, no continues makes it challenging
Gauntlet, how far can you get on 9 credits (best with 2+ people)
Street Fighter Alpha3, Still can't beat the last guy
Tetris (atari), single player fun
Tetris Plus2, multiplayer fun
Bubble Bobble

im in love with the metal slug series. its just pure action, shooting, blowing ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- up, great animation, and it really takes a lot of skill to beat the game without using 20+ continues. my record is beating metal slug 2 in 9 continues

if its skill you desire then the shmups are your best bet imho.
they induce an almost meditative like state when playing because it requires every fibre of your being just to stay alive..

check out shmups.com

to some these arent even considered games..
theyre mind expanding digital narcotics..
a good ten minute shmups session can leave you trembling in a puddle of your own sweat...the intensity is hard to define.
its a great genre ;)
id look for games by CAVE,Atlus,Treasure, and theres many more..check out that site, theres alot to absorb for one single genre.

If you want a challenging game, try Gravitar.

Gravitar makes me want to put my fist through the screen sometimes... then I go back for more... :)

I love Track and Field type games... I wish there was a good version for winter games...

Hi!

Well:

WWF Wrestlemania (**) -> You'll laugh, you'll cry...

Guwange (*) -> Great artistic shooting game, i like the "oriental" style! :P

Cadillacs and Dinossuars (*,**,***) -> Such a interesting beat 'em up from capcom that i just don't understand why it's so unspoken...

Pinball action (*) -> For those who like mame, pinball and can't afford a real pinball table...

That's it for now  ;D

blockout is hard and will mess with your mind, not least of all because your controls are not likely to be the same configuration as the original.

I'm hooked on Timber, Tapper, and Mr. DO!

btw ... what's your high score on Mr. Do! (mines only 175,100 level 16 ... that probably sucks but I'm getting better  :) )

Shock Troopers 1 and 2.

Awesome gameplay, music, and great with one or two players.

Here's my list:

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom -- no continues, fun game
Gumbo -- adult-themed tetris-style game. Wish it wasn't adult-themed, it's excellent
Stack Columns -- Same basic gameplay as Gumbo, but no 2-player. Let's see if you can beat this one without a continue.
(Both Gumbo and Stack Columns resemble an old share-ware game for the Mac called "Jewelbox" -- if anyone has a copy of Jewelbox, please get in touch.)
Gyruss -- my all-time favorite game. The No. 2 reason I'm building a cab is because Gyruss stinks with just a keyboard
Gauntlet, Xenophobe, Rampage -- The No. 1 reason I'm building a cab is because these games are fun when you have friends over
Roadblasters -- Think Atari still has T-shirts available?  ;D

Gunbird and Gunbird 2 are 2 of (IMO) hardest shmups out there.. first levels like "ok this is kinda hard do do do" then pow, level 2 ---smurfette--- slaps you..

best on those, 3 credits on 1 and 5 on 2.. :(

Just for fun, go play a game of Lasso.  It looks dirt simple, but it gets to be a challenge...

(I'll probably get shot for this one.  I really don't know why I like that game, but every now and then I just have to play it.)
