There are hard limits on control options at times, but even when that works, sometimes the game just doesn't feel right on a cabinet. NES, SNES, Sega Genesis era games USUALLY work fine with a typical 8-way stick and buttons. But not always. For instance, some SNES games, it wasn't unreasonable to be pressing two face buttons with a thumb while simultaneously using both L and R buttons and also using the d-pad. Doing 4 buttons at once on an arcade with one hand is doable, but a lot less comfortable on an arcade panel. Plus, some longer format games (think of something like Zelda) is just not meant to be played while standing, or even while on a stool hunched over a cabinet. You CAN do it. But it feels wrong. Newer games are even tougher. They are often designed around the idea of dual analog sticks, AND a d-pad, AND like 8-10 buttons. I can't even imagine trying to play a game like Skyrim or Halo on an arcade control panel. Hell, even most stuff from the N64 era is a hard pass for me. On the positive side, a lot of fighting games still work really well as the basic concept of the controls haven't changed much. Same for driving games (if you have a wheel and pedals). Which is probably why these games still do well on their own dedicated arcade machines too. |

I played through the brief Marvel Cosmic Invasion demo tonight with forum celebrity Howard and it’s a very fun game that would have been welcome in an early 90s arcade… but it requires… so… many… inputs…. Just for stuff like navigating menus. Why a specific button used for nothing else versus an option on the screen? Thus is madness. |

Just elaborate on how we are going ---smurfing--- backwards in terms of cab friendliness.... I'm building a new cab and because it has removable panels I have a keyboard encoder for common controls (start, coin, ect) and my fighter panel, which I have to use on games like this due to the number of buttons, is just a cheap zero delay to keep costs down (each panel is just usb to make things simpler). So Shredder's revenge, which this game is based on, sees the zero delay as a joystick but all the buttons are out of order and the game won't allow you to use a keyboard and joystick for the same player at the same time. This means my start and coin buttons don't work. In Cosmic invasion the zero delay isn't recognized at all! So to play either of these games based on arcade beat em ups, I have to use xbox360ce like it's 15 years ago and use a panel with 8 buttons even though these games really should only need 4 max. I feared back in the day when xinput was introduced that it'd erode support for regular HID gamepads and keyboard support and it seems like I'm right. Every game developed now assumes that you'll be using a xbox controller, which is fair as it's the best input option on the pc, but if you want to do anything odd..... |
