Laminating, t-molding and stuff

I've been toiling away on this when I get spare time and now the main woodworky bits are done I thought it was time for an update…

Got everything primed and painted black on the inside - then laminated the outside panels. Laminating was pretty easy this time although I did cut a chunk out of the wood when my flush bit got gunked up with glue and then decided to fall apart mid cut. Pretty small chunk and should be easy enough to fix later.

Cut the t-mold slot (my least favourite job as it's such an arse to fix it you mess it up). Ask me how many times I've messed it up previously…

(Although the idea javeryh proposed worked a treat!)

Sorted my speaker panel out

Then got it glued together and this thing is rock solid with zero wobble which is great.

Decided to do a test fit of the marquee monitor and man this thing seems tighter than when I tried it before painting. Could be the primer/paint has soaked in and made the groove smaller or could be last time I did it the cab was on its side - either way I ran a little sandpaper around the groove to make it a bit easier to get in the right position.

As I was putting the main 42 inch screen in I realised that I hadn't adjusted the screen mount when I took off 2 inches from the height of the marquee area which meant that the screen didn't fit where I'd planned but a couple of adjustments and that all went in fine.

Ignore the dusty sides! It still has the protective film over the laminate on this photo... here it is removed with the main OLED screen in and the T-molding on:

Still loads to do:

* Trim back door to fit
* Marquee needs plexi and holders to secure it properly
* Got a gun4ir on a whim. Not sure how I'm gonna mount the guns…
* The whole control panel needs to made
I realise I've left the CP til last. I get hyper focused on each stage and so find it hard to focus on later stages. I know the controls I'm using but haven't even started on a design for it, or decided if I want it swappable or not.

The good news is that the software side is mostly there. MAME, model 2 and 3, Demul.  I haven't decided whether Teknoparrot is worth it yet or not. I'd say 90% of the games I play are pre-1990’s and while some of the games look pretty I'm not sure if I would actually play them.

And some final pictures of it next to it's sibling...!

And the money shot!

And in case you noticed - I've realised that sunlight destroys t-molding.  After 8 years of sitting in a conservatory, the original Blip t-molding is in a right state where it's got brittle and broken in several places. I've got some more on order to replace it all but apart from that it's still in perfect condition :)

Amazing work. Glad the t-molding worked out for you.

I might have missed it but what type of monitor are you using for the marquee? It look great and well proportioned.

Also, is there somewhere I can go read about how to set up the square playfield on the TV that you have running vertically? It's such an elegant solution and after I'm done with my current project I want to look into something like that. Believe it or not after all of these years I don't have a 2 player cabinet in my house! I want to rectify that next year.

Hi javeryh - the marquee monitor is this one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/304811481507

It has a 1920 x 540 resolution which is a pretty good balance for marquees as you should be able to get them all looking good with this ratio screen. It's 24.4" diagonal which works out with a visible display of 597.6mm x 168mm. It's perfect for a regular sized 60cm/24" internal width cabinet.

As for getting the square screen... this drove me mad for quite a while but it's actually relatively simple (or at least it was in the end!). I'm  using the AMD Adrenaline software and created a custom resolution using the settings in the picture below. Took a while to get it exactly right as  I kept getting errors but this works for me.

I use AttractMode as a frontend so I just created a layout file which is a square 2160x2160 resolution. AttractMode has a plugin called Multimon which does all the heavy lifting for the dynamic marquee, and provided your marquee files are in a directory with the same names as the roms it all works, regardless of emulator.

If you need more help just let me know and I'll write up the steps to set it all up.
