Try to help a friend with R-85

Cheboy:
I have a friend that has an R-85 and the volume is always very loud.

I haven't been to his place to dig into it yet, but should I be looking at the volume control potentiometer or the amp?  He says the volume control will work sometimes if he fiddles with it.
