How to add games to MAME?

I have the Xenocrisis rom and I have followed the instructions: copy xenocrisis.zip to the MAME roms folder, edit /hash/neogeo.xml adding the text provided with the game, and then run the game with mame neogeo xenocrisis. It works. Now I would like to add the game to MAME, so that it is displayed with my frontends. I have tried editing MAME.xml duplicating the section corresponding to a Neogeo game and replacing the rom name, title, year, etc. However, it is not listed by MAME nor by my frontends. Any idea?

Homebrews won't be added to mainline MAME.  That's why HBMAME exists.

"It works." ==> You got this homebrew to run in MAME.  What's the problem?   :dunno

"frontends" - How many FE programs are you running?   ???   Each one has different ways to add to the games list so mentioning which one(s) you are using would help.
