A Galaga/Phoenix type game with eight way movement?
« on: April 07, 2023, 12:00:09 pm »
I played a Galaga/Phoenix style arcade game few times in late 80s (or very early 90s) that I would like to add to my eventually-to-be arcade cabinet. Only problem is that in my memory you could move in the whole screen on that game so even if Phoenix, especially birds in phase 3 and 4, seems familiar I have doubts that it's that. Because I haven't found any such space shooters that have free movement I'm willing to believe that the game actually was Phoenix (or one of the clones) and it mixes on my memory to some C64 game that had the whole screen movement.

So are there any Galaga/Phoenix style games where you can move on whole screen instead of just the bottom?

Sorry, forgot to mention, Gaplus was mentioned elsewhere in the forum but its graphics don't look familiar. That's why I'm pretty sure it was Phoenix that my memory mixes with some other game.

Gatsbee was a well known hack that added 8 way movement to Galaga

There were plenty of others though, games like Enigma 2 added a thruster button for example.

Gorf?

Gorf is so different from Phoenix though.... As much as I liked Phoenix as a kid now, I can't stand it. Enemy movements are weird, game sounds are annoying, and the fire rate changes on different boards.

Gatsbee

If the game wasn't actually Phoenix there is a good chance that it was this but my memory mixes the appearance to Eagle Empire which was a C64 version of Phoenix.

Thank you all, with this info I think that I'll add Gatsbee and Phoenix to selection.

Try  "Halley's Comet".

Free roaming vertical shooter, similar to Galaga style play.

You will want a Leaf-switch Button, to play it well...  as maximum rapidfire, is needed for optimum play.

I don't intend to hoard every possible game to the cabinet but only such that will be played. Halley's Comet looks like something I could test.
