Can't get notifications working
« on: March 01, 2023, 04:22:45 pm »
I can't get notifications working. I've subscribed to (my own) thread: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,152919.0.html by turning notifications on for that thread. In my profile I have the folowing settings:

I used to use a hotmail.com address here, but last week I switched to a gmail address. Still no go, neither in spam. What to do?

It turns out after I disabled and re-enabled notifications once again, it works with Gmail. To test however I moved it back to hotmail, and now I locked myself out. I can't login with my Rataplan626 account anymore as that's not activated, and the activation mail never arrived.
So can some admin either manually activate my Rataplan626 account again, or change the email address to the one linked to this Rataplan727 account which I created to come in contact.
Or if needed supply the person I should PM to be able to access my account again.

Actually it's a bit weird to be able to lock yourself out. If you mistyped your email address, you're locked out. Usually the old login is working UNTIL the new one is activated.

Saint can manually activate accounts with a Hotmail address.

I e-mailed him to ensure he knows your situation.

Why won't notifications or activation e-mails work with some e-mail services?
Multiple services, including Hotmail, flag activity from the arcadecontrols.com server as SPAM and deny it. I don't know how to resolve this, I have made efforts before with various services as per whatever instructions they give to get off their spam list, but since the server sends people notifications and other bits of automated email in fairly high volume, our server gets flagged as SPAM-sending, even though all the emails are legitimate and opt-in.

I don't have a way to fix this, though it's been some time since I looked.

Would be great if he could unlock my Rataplan626 account.
As per the mail spam filtering, MS is notorious for that. But if you arrange TLS, SPF, DKIM and DMARC things should be fine. Thing is it doesn't even show up in the spam, it's blocked even before that. So either mail configuration is very bad (no TLS for example just like the forum itself... Pretty bad in 2023), or you should whitelist yourself using https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/supportrequestform/8ad563e3-288e-2a61-8122-3ba03d6b8d75
We've used that several times to help customers get their mail going and usually they respond within hours.

No reponse yet. Can an admin activate my Rataplan626 account, or change it's emailaddress to the one linked to this Rataplan727 account?

Sorry about that.

Saint hasn't logged in here in almost a month and he's the only one who can do manual account activations.   :embarassed:
- Forwarded the previous email to Saint's gmail account in case the other account accidently dropped it into the bit bucket.

Changed your Rataplan626 account e-mail to the one on the Rataplan727 account.
- Had to add a period in the middle since you can't have the exact same email for two separate forum accounts.  IIRC the emails should still show up in your inbox because of how your email provider handles them.

Hi, yeah well.. as I can't login with Rataplan626 anymore I created Rataplan727, with the gmail account I used before on Rataplan626. If Rataplan626 gets enabled again, I don't need 727 anymore, which could either be removed or it's email address changed. a.b@gmail.com is a different address than a..b@gmail.com. I'm pretty sure gmail does not recognize that address, even though I could add that as an alias to my mailbox. I just sent an email to my address with additional . and gmail returned that immediately.

I sent you a PM with another address. Thanks!

btw I hope Saint is alright

W00t! Thanks, I can use my account again. I'll not switch to hotmail again, learned my lessons.

Glad to hear it.   ;D

As you point out, two periods next to each other isn't acceptable.  Looks like that causes some sort of parsing error.
- You don't run into that parsing error if there is at least one letter/number between the periods.  i.e. abc.def@gmail and abc.d.ef@gmail and a.b.c.d.e.f@gmail should all go to the same inbox.
***NOTE: This does not work with all e-mail providers.  I've only confirmed it with gmail. ***

I sent you a PM with another address. Thanks!
Reply sent with more details and an important question at the end.

Yep, gmail is great for exploiting one time only promotions over and over with that period trick.

AFAIK hotmail does not support inserting periods into the usermane.

also, with Gmail, you can put your address as "someusername+spamsite@gmail.com" and it is recognized as just "someusername@gmail.com" by Gmail... then you can then sort your mail or find out if the site is selling your email this way.

whodathunk that netflix was selling my addy to penis enlargement pills suppliers, because all the penis enlargement spam mail messages come addressed to "username+netflix@gmail.com"

Hotmail, according to recent experience, seems to be very aggressive about filtering anything gaming related.  I had to add AMD and many others to my safe senders list to even get their warranty confirmation emails.  You don’t even get notified that you’re receiving said emails.

Meanwhile I’m getting 20-40 emails a day about “you’ve won our Costco survey” and the like.

Huh, I've had a Hotmail account for 20 years or more, and the only thing I ever receive is spam for Rayban sunglasses, day after day. The last time I received something I actually wanted was 9 years ago.
