2 player cabinet
« on: February 24, 2023, 02:28:14 am »
I'm contemplating making a 2 player racing cabinet but I don't have room for the sit-down type. I'd like something that my kids could play with that actually has a steering wheel and petals for 2. Does it make sense to attempt this? Can this be done with 1 monitor?

It might, depending on your game list.
- Do you plan on using 270 degree wheels or 360 degree wheels?

I suggest you start by reading this thread.

You may also want to carefully work through the design process outlined in the "What type of build meets my needs?" section of the FAQ.
http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/FAQ#What_type_of_build_meets_my_needs.3F

Can this be done with 1 monitor?
For 2-player games with an overhead point-of-view like Super Sprint, one monitor display is easy.

For 2-player games with a driver's point-of-view like Daytona, a single monitor display will be much more difficult. (maybe impossible)
- You might be able to make a custom .LAY (layout) file to display both P1 and P2 views on one screen.  :dunno

Nothing stopping you building something to fit a space, especially if it's for kids. Sliding or folding seats, close to the floor, etc. My setup is smaller than an old dedicated side-by-side was, and it's not at all cramped.

I wouldn't recommend a single monitor, or even a single PC, for a two-player driving setup. Teknoparrot runs more than a few kid-friendly games like Mario Kart DX, and that's only going to work over LAN. Fewer controllers/peripherals per PC also makes config a bit easier.

So the mention of a small cabinet suitable for kids to play on was ringing a little bell of recognition in my head, I was sure I'd seen something similar to this somewhere. So, I had a look back through the Driving section of the forum and sure enough I found it - a really nice looking mini Twin cabinet one of the forum members here made:

I think this might be exactly the sort of thing you're looking for ;D

Yeah, likewise, I couldn't recall any specific details to search for, but I just scrolled back through the main driving section pages and found it about 3 pages back or so.
