4 player control panel theory

Wade:

In my opinion, if you make a 4 player panel that is to scale with the drawings you are showing, then it will be too cramped to play 4-player no matter how you configure the sticks and buttons.  Unless of course, you and your friends are 75 lbs each.

Rawker's looks like it might be doable though.

btw... this is one of the reasons I wrote my frontend JFront.

I have 1234 when playing 4 player games
I have 0123 when playing 1-3 player games.

All with configuring mames default settings 2 times... and its all taken care of..

The problem I have with the 3124 layout is that when playing 2 player Smash TV, the joysticks aren't spaced tha same for player 1 as they are for player 2...

This is the 3124 layout:

I could move player 3 farther to the left to equalize the distance but that would create a bit of empty space between 3 and 1.

My design is limited by several factors...

- I want the stick spacing to be the same when playing Smash TV.  Also, I'd prefer the sticks to be somewhat close together.

- I want all the joysticks to be in a single line.  No angled layouts.

- My control panel is 37", and that's just the width of the top.  When you consider the inside dimensions of the control panel box itself, I have a few inches less to work with.

- I may want to squeeze in 1 or two trackballs in the future.

So at the moment, I think one of the original 2 layouts looks most promising for my needs.

Those look familiar.  ;D

If you are dead set on having the stick spacing the same for smash T.V. and want them in a straight line, then you don't have much of a choice.  You may want to consider having a 3142 layout though.  That way, your first player will be more centered for single player games and the rest meets your demands.  I really don't see any room for a couple of trackballs on top of 4 joys within the confines of your width.  Unless you plan on making your CP deep enough to accommmodate your trackballs you may want to look at swappable CP or something.

Are they yours?  I can't remember where I found the original image that I'm hacking up.

That's what I'm thinking.

My control panel is about 15 inches deep.  I'm thinking that maybe I can set the joystick line back a little and put 2 trackballs in front.  If I used the 3142 layout instead, I could put the trackballs below the "7 button" areas and they would be relatively centered on the screen.

Here's a pic of my control panel as it is currently...
