ATI 4350 vs 6450 for groovymame.
« on: April 02, 2022, 05:20:16 am »
Hello.

I currently use a 4350 with groovymame on windows 10. vga to scart connection to a trinitron with a core i5 2400 hp office desktop.
I saw Calamity recommands a 6450 in the retrorgb interview.
Is there any advantage in running one vs the other? (i potentially have a easy access to a cheap 6450 and wonder if its worth the upgrade)
I only play 2d stuff.

Thanks.

I concur, then 6450 is the easier card to setup. It is also smaller. Probably uses less power too.

Apart from the setup phase and power usage, does it make any difference for running groovymame at all in terms of rendering/features/limitations?

Not really, or not that I've noticed. I can run most mame games I care about on a Core2duo 3Ghz with running XP 64 bit, 4GB RAM and a ATI X1050 64MB GPU.

When I switched from an old X700 to an HD5450 I noticed a definite improvement on the colors and, unless my poor eyes deceived me, the sharpness of the image.

I believe that newer cards have better DACs on board that will give you a better image on your monitor.
On a scale of fakeness, from more genuine to more fake, we'd have:

1.- Plastic plants (cf. Fake Plastic Trees)
2.- Inflatable dolls
3.- Arcade cabinets with LCD monitors

I don't see any difference myself, comparing X1050 and HD6450 here. Maybe I should pull the oscilloscope out, but many things to do.

Most video card since about 2006 have used the same 400Mhz DAC (RAMDAC), with a few exceptions. There is no incentive to update RAMDAC in modern video cards as it is not needed for modern display types. I'm pretty sure the X700 cards used 400Mhz, though they might come a couple of years earlier.

So I think it doesn't really matter.

E.g. with the HD 4350 you need to run GM with admin rights, this annoyance isn't required with HD 5000+ cards.

HD 4000 was a good option for Windows XP. Specially if you're using Windows 10, the 6450 is a much better option.
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.
