My soldering skills suck and my eyesight is even worse.
Couldn't imagine being able to pull off what you manage with these.
Lookin forward to pics!

Picked this thing up today.  I’ve been very happy with my Yihua (“yeehaw”) soldering station so I got their desoldering station.  First test was an EA PCB, which always vexed me on the shop vac setup.  To the point I was using repro PCBs versus popping chips.  Anyway, about five minutes and a couple stubborn pins but end result was clean.  ROM chip fell right off the SEGA PCB that took me about a minute.  Process was actually probably a little faster with the lard, shop vac, foot switch, and radio shack iron… but this is quiet enough for indoor use.

Heya PBJ,

I was doing some research for a post... and I came across something interesting, that I never knew existed, for the Megadrive

https://segaretro.org/XE-1_AP

This was an Analog Controller... released for the Megadrive..  and supposedly works with several MD games:

After Burner II
Super Monaco GP II
Fastest 1
Galaxy Force II
M.U.S.H.A.
Space Harrier

Mega-CD
After Burner III
Night Striker
StarBlade

32X
After Burner Complete
Space Harrier

Pretty Wild stuff.  I wonder if any Emulators support Analog controls on these games.  Its been a long time since Ive
messed with anything outside of Mame.

That thing is crazy looking!
Never saw one.

And I love it when James finds more tools.
How much was that desoldering thing?

$140 on Amazon.  I should have bought one a decade ago.  I did learn a lesson about cleaning out the spring trap regularly.  However, you can just hold the spring over a trashcan with forceps and hold a cigarette lighter flame on it and that clogged solder will just melt right out.  (The other shop vac rig I’d have to throw into a fire pit occasionally)

The soldering iron side of it comes with a chisel tip and I learned another valuable lesson today… do sweep soldering on SMD chips with a chisel tip.  It was a total disaster with my other iron and a fine tip.

You are looking at the absolute edge of my soldering abilities and eyesight.  The rest of these components are through hole and should be easy.

The things I do for Malenko.   :embarassed:
