Arcade1up Tempest Conversion to Cabaret - Done!
« on: February 15, 2022, 07:14:57 pm »
I originally bought this in December, and recently completed it. This is the build thread if anyone is interested in doing something similar.

Couldn't resist and bought this when it was $250. I sold my Bartop Tempest and I miss it, and I see this as a suitable replacement. I'll set it up with a few spinner games I like (you know, Gyruss, Time Pilot, Galaxian and Asteroids!) and a PC.

This is one of the better Arcade1up's, that keeps the original cabinets form factor. They dorked up the monitor and control panel, so I'll fix that.

The beauty of an Arcade1up is it's an Ikea type kit. Of course, it's also one of the downsides as the quality of the materials is definitely for a home user.

2 hours of built time total and I'm ready to start figuring out the internals. The majority of the time was spent trimming up the riser to align to the side of the cab. I'll also be adding a coin door and wanted the front to look like 1 piece, instead of sitting on the riser.

Also, I sold the internals and recouped the majority of the costs of the cabinet. So, that's a plus!

I built the control panel and the front panel at the same time. I went with a X-arcade coin door and the control panel is made from 3/4" ply.

I ordered my control panel graphics from GameOnFrafix. They did as good as they always do. I wanted to be pretty authentic here, so I ordered Volcano Buttons, Happ buttons using leaf switches (Black plungers and translucent blue outer rings LED lit), and a tempest knob to go on a turbo twist 2

I'm using a i5 windows 7 PC and Mala. I'm using 2 different versions of mame so I can use my version of Mame that supports a few non-spinner games

Lights off

Mounted a 19" monitor. It just barely fits, but looks great

100% done. All tools put away, games configured, backed up all my configs. Here are some finished shots. Super happy with how it turned out. I loaded up 17 games:
Arkanoid, Asteroids, blasteroids, cameltry, Galaxian, Gryruss, Omega Race, Puzzle Bobble 2-4, Puzzloop, Super Breakout, Star Trek, Tempest, Tempest Tubes, Time Pilot and Zektor.

I won't be letting this one go. I totally miss my bartop and this will fill the void. This stands at 5'2" tall, and the control panel is at a good height. Some small regret where I put the 2 buttons, I wish I put them 2" to the left, but it's very do-able. All said and done, it's about a 30-35 hour build. I found using the Arcade1up as a base saved me some time and maybe a few bucks.

Some highlights from the build:
19" Monitor in Vertical orientation
  • New Marquee from Game Factory
  • New front panel with coin door
  • Trimmed up riser to line up with the cabinet sides
  • New control panel
  • Turbo Twist Spinner with Tempest knob
  • 2 leaf switch Happy buttons with lit outer rings from Arcade Paradise
  • 2 volcano buttons
  • Mounted power plug in the riser
  • Installed new plexi
  • Credit button under the control panel (with easter egg graphic of my name and when it was built)
  • Fresh computer build rock'n Windows 7 w/SSD

Slid in to place with all the other games. You can see I had a cabaret sized hole for this cab to fill. Super happy with it.

That turned out nice Lew.  Rebuilding the front was a good call.

This came out really nice - how is the size? I think if you are going to mod one of them, this is definitely the way to go.  You got rid of all the bad stuff (riser, wonky CP, etc.) and added a bigger monitor, marquee, better artwork, a PC and a coin door.  Good job.

Neat! I like the idea of playing the non-spinner games like Time Pilot with a spinner.

Are we not going to talk about the full-size R2-D2 in the background? I'd like to know more about that please!

Also, Tempest turned out great. I like the idea of Gyruss and Time Pilot with a spinner too.

Thanks WP34!

Javery - it plays great. The size is what a cabaret would be, and as a bonus, it has a 19" screen.

I built R2 1n 2014. He's a prop piece made from wood and styrene. I didn't want to put electronics in him. A few build pics.
