In the past I strictly used MAME (plus older console ports) for fighting games.

I've been thinking about picking up some of the older games on Steam, mainly for convenience. Then I started reading about Fightcade and apparently that is somewhat popular as well.

For those who have used various options including Steam ports, MAME and Fightcade emulation, what is preferred for arcade fighting games?  Any issues with Steam versions? I'm mainly concerned about controller assignments and the Steam versions playing nice with ultrawide displays.
