Repairing Tatio Double Dragon Audio Issue
« on: June 12, 2021, 01:43:56 am »
Hi,

I’m currently restoring/updating my Tatio Double Dragon arcade machine and ran into an issue that I’m not familiar with. The cabinet has one 5W 8ohm speaker which recently is playing distorted game music. However, the sound effects such as punches or character voice noises sound perfect over the music. Does this sound like a speaker or circuit board issue? I’ve tried unplugging and cleaning the main board wire harness with no luck. Any help would be much appreciated.

generally lopsided sound (some sounds fine, others garbled) is a corrupted ROM issue.

pull and check against rom dump and/or erase bad rom and reprogram.

lilshawn is right. It sounds like a ROM issue and there could be a corrupted ROM.

You might get lucky first by finding the sound ROMs and pulling them out, cleaning the legs and reseating them.

I had a similar problem on a game and the ROM tested bad. It ended up being a broken trace on the PCB.

Thanks for the responses. Would you know which chip in the photo controls the sound? Also, is this a “bootleg” board or an original? I’ve owned my cabinet for over 10 years and never inquired if it’s authentic.

It appears to be a bootleg like this one not the original shown here.
- The original PCBs are marked with P/Ns "TA-0021-P1-4" and "TA-0021-P2-4" which isn't on your board.
- Next to the label on yours, there's a "4068A-2N" silkscreened on the board that isn't on the original boards.
- The round numeric ROM labels on yours are like the ones on the bootleg, not the square alphanumeric ones on the originals.

Based on your ROM labels and the MAME ddragon.cpp source code here, it looks like you have a "ddragonba" board. (lines 1488-1492 ==> adpcm sound ROMs are "7" and "8")

It is a bootleg.

Can I switch my bootleg board with an original one without changing anything? Is it a plug and play setup or is my wire harness/connections made specifically for the bootleg board? Is there anyway to tell if the cabinet is original (it  has a couple old Kentucky inspection seal stickers on the back).

I appreciate all the help!

That is the style of cabinet Double Dragon would normally be in.   That gray, Taito side art makes it unlikely to be anything but a real Double Dragon..... conversions tend to just have plain black sides as it looks better.

I might look for an original DD board if my wire connections are compatible. Would all I need to do is plug my existing wire harness to the board’s edge connector? Is there any websites that sell these other than eBay?

You could register on KLOV and post that you want to buy one.

It never hurts to double-check the PCB and harness pinouts when swapping boards, but reverting back to an original Double Dragon board should be plug-and-play.

The edge connector on a Double Dragon board uses the very common JAMMA wiring standard.
https://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=7619

The harness is probably original and the bootleg is probably a JAMMA board.

If you want to double-check that the harness hasn't been altered, here's a JAMMA pinout.

Is there any websites that sell these other than eBay?
If "these" = wire harnesses:
You almost certainly won't need to replace the harness, but there are many vendors that sell JAMMA harnesses.

Watch out for the "CHAMMA" (Chinese JAMMA) harness used by many of the X-in-1 multi-game boards.
- The CHAMMA harness changes some of the unused pins and grounds (pins 25-27+c-e) into button 4-6 inputs for P1 and P2 instead of using a separate "kick" harness for games that need those inputs.
- IIRC when pins 27 and e are connected to ground (JAMMA standard), a CHAMMA PCB won't boot properly because it thinks those buttons are always pressed.

If "these" = original Double Dragon boards:
If you can repair the audio issue so the bootleg is working fine, it may not be worth the effort and expense to revert to original boards.   :dunno

You can put "want to buy" (WTB) posts in the Buy/Sell/Trade sub-forum and on KLOV like Gilrock advised.

There are also vendors that sell used PCBs.

Great to hear! I might have more issues with the board than the sound. The jump and kick buttons inconsistently work and I need to disconnect/reconnect the harness connector until they start working. I initially thought it was the push buttons and quick disconnects so I’ve replaced them already with no luck. The harness wires appear to be seated tightly with no corrosion or visible defects.

I believe this is my pinout diagram:

Given the problems you're reporting, continuity/resistance check from the PCB to the farthest connection.
- A good connection should have <2 Ohms resistance.
- As always, make sure the power is disconnected . . . unless you want to fry your multimeter.   >:D

For example:
Meter lead 1                                                                                                           Meter lead 2
    |                                                                                                                             |
PCB ---- Edge Connector ---- JAMMA Connector ---- Wire ---- Quick Disconnect ---- Button QD Tab

Also check the PCB connector contacts and JAMMA connector contacts for dirt, corrosion, wear, and damage.

EDIT: At first glance, the euro-style terminals looked like a harness hack, but pg 4 of the Operating Manual shows that they were in the original cabinet.

Also, what should I expect to pay for a working original DD board?

Let me try to find a replacement first and I’ll let you know. Thanks!
