Janky Street Fighter cab restore sort of...
« on: April 17, 2021, 12:19:28 pm »
I dragged a Street Fighter cab out of some dude's basement in a sketchy neighborhood in Rockford, IL awhile back.

I will dig up some pics and post them here.

The game worked, but I don't think it was ever a legit cab. The construction isn't consistent with commercial arcade machines.

Street Fighter was definitely not the original game in the cab.

Here is documentation on my recent efforts to make this ugly duckling more presentable and playable.

Here is the CP that was on the cab. I stripped off the terrible overlay that was on it.

I thought about spot welding or epoxying a steel plate over the top, but I didn't trust my ability to smooth and blend everything flat afterward.

So I bought a relatively cheap metal brake that can handle up to 18 gauge steel at 30 inches wide. I plan on doing a bunch more CPs for other cabs.

This was a way to get my feet wet.

So the first thing I did was measure the old CP.

I don't have many steel working tools yet so I ordered a piece of sheet steel to the same dimensions as the old CP.

Time to start bending steel.

The clamping bar is pretty wide so it limited my bend options at the end. I kind of forced it to work.

One bend was not pretty, but you can't see it on the cab, and it couldn't really be avoided with the equipment I have.

I must say that is a pretty nice fit for my first steel CP.

Next I went to slagcoin.com to get the Street Fighter joystick and button layout.

After that I printed it out actual size and taped it to the CP.

Next I used a spring loaded punch to mark all of the hole positions.

Next is simply drill the holes. When cutting steel I slow down my drill press and use oil to lubricate the cutting bit.

I couldn't reach a few of the holes with my drill press so I just used a hand drill for those.

I drilled carriage bolt holes smaller than the square shoulder and then filed the holes to shape and size.

Then I gave it a basic rattle can paint job to protect the steel.

The nozzle leaked globs. That is what I get for letting paint sit around forever.

But it is good enough to be eventually covered with a CPO.

If you are paying attention you can see where I ---fouled up beyond all recognition--- up a couple of the carriage bolt holes. It was a learning process.

That was all a couple of weeks ago.

This last weekend I flew out to Arroyo's place.

That is a whole other adventure.

While I was out there he did some Photoshop work for me and gave me a tutorial... (a photoshop tutorial).

When I got home I laid my vector layout file on top of his Photoshop work.

Then I moved the elements around to match my cp.

I had to make a phone call for additional help from Arroyo.

Once that was all sorted I printed it out actual size in super low fidelity and no color.

that way I could match it up to the real CP before it goes off to the printer.

It still needs to be spruced up a bit, but it is almost ready to get printed.

I will post a final pic of the CPO in full color before it goes to the printer.

And that brings you up to date.

I found some pics from the day I brought it home. The first is the basement I pulled it out of. It was supposed to be on the main floor. I got it halfway up the stairs and then renegotiated the price.

I don't have access to a Dynamo cab. I would need a lot of details, but I could take a stab at it.

If I had to venture a guess.......

based on the toe-in at the kick plate, the monitor angle, and the bezel/glass location......

Carnival by Sega/Gremlin , but likely a copy/bootleg based off of that as it lacks the kickplate speaker n stuffs.

It is also put together with screws. The marquee is captured between the cabinet parts. No retainers. And it is short for an upright. It looks like a home built, but there is a serial number stamped into the wood in back.

Yeah, it has a bit of a Walmart shelving feel to it.

Really nice metal work, there. If I had a little more real estate in my shop, I would definitely be going down that path.

You’ve done very nice work on this.  But how are you going to pause the game or bring up the menu?  Volume control?

There will be a volume knob inside the coin door.

There is no pause button, but after you put coins in, a menu, or at least a dialog comes up to let you select 1 or 2 players.

I have a SF2 Champion Edition PCB waiting to be used.
The original Street Fighter is rather painful to play.

I'm hard pressed to think the word janky is appropriate for a build/restoration thread of yours.

Although I suppose what you began with was kinda/sorta.

You should be proud of that control panel.

My first job out here on the rock was with a raingutter company and I learned quickly how tricky bending flat stock can be.  There is only one place on 'Oahu I know of that could make a panel like that- and it might not even look that good.

Do you have a plan for the speaker panel?

Apart from the crooked looking coin door (and I've had a few glasses of red wine mind you) that was the only piece that really screamed janky to me at first glance.
Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools! I can fix it.

I agree, some nice speaker mesh across the top and it will look 1000% better.

My immediate goal is to get the cab playable.

I have a gutted Taito cab that wants to become a Front Line.

And I have a Konami 4 player with Soul Edge in it that I need to do something with.

Once everything is available to play I can worry about making them pretty.

Don't get me started.

The board set is kicking ---my bottom---.

I set it aside out of frustration.

I am going to work on this cab and then circle back around to the Captain's Chair.

I ordered parts for the cab.

I removed the speaker panel and I will cut a new one.

I will post some pics hopefully this weekend after the parts come in.

Whoever built this cab cut the bezel and marquee down to fit this cab. You can have it.

I will pack the art and bring it it Zapcon.

I drilled carriage bolt holes smaller than the square shoulder and then filed the holes to shape and size.

is there a name for that tool?
i have two pre-drilled metal control panels with holes too far apart for the sanwa style joysticks i have and need to drill it.
was going to use a bit to make a hole just big enough for the carriage bolts to snuggly fit and grip the sides.
but if i can make the holes square that would be ideal.
I know what the tool is and what others call it but i'm not finding it anywhere and think i'll have to make one myself.

This is still a bit too big for #10 carriage bolts. I had to grind it down at the end to taper it more.

My solution cost five bucks and a minute or two on the grinder.

I can use the rest of the 400 some odd dollars I saved on beer.

I love tools more than the next guy - I would not spend $400 to make a square hole when I make 4-12 a year..
Square file in a round hole - just enough to get a carriage bolt in for $5?  I'm on board with that..

Whoever built this cab cut the bezel and marquee down to fit this cab. You can have it.

I will pack the art and bring it it Zapcon.

Cool, hand it to Haruman and he'll ship it to me :)

Really nice work on that metal panel. That’s the way to do it man, the spirit of BYOAC is right here.  :applaud:

Looking forward to seeing this one finished. People throw shade at SF1 but I have fond memories for the game. The audio is so nostalgic to arcades back then. For some reason every arcade that had this game had the volume turned up to 11! You could hear this game over most of the other  sounds at every location it was in.

I drilled carriage bolt holes smaller than the square shoulder and then filed the holes to shape and size.

[img]http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=159740.0;attach=387434;image[/i]

is there a name for that tool?
i have two pre-drilled metal control panels with holes too far apart for the sanwa style joysticks i have and need to drill it.
was going to use a bit to make a hole just big enough for the carriage bolts to snuggly fit and grip the sides.
but if i can make the holes square that would be ideal.

I know what the tool is and what others call it but i'm not finding it anywhere and think i'll have to make one myself.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07S5Y9JPV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is still a bit too big for #10 carriage bolts. I had to grind it down at the end to taper it more.

$4 at harbor freight.
sweet.
thanks.

With (a lot of) help from Arroyo, I have finished the CPO file. It is ready to go to the printers.

Next up is the marquee and bezel. Those will be much easier. I think they just need to be resized.

I will be cutting a new speaker panel tomorrow.

My marquee light came in today.

This thing should come together pretty quickly now.

The only holdup will be the artwork. All of the guys who do this stuff seem to be backed up right now.

I need a durable cpo. There will not be plexi on top.
I will also need a marquee with the artwork printed on it.
And a printed bezel. It can be printed on cardboard.

I got sidetracked by a friend who needed a Wacom tablet USB connector fixed.

I cut the new speaker panel, and now I have to cut the top panel 3/4 of an inch shorter to fit the new marquee once it comes in.

I still need to finalize the marquee artwork. Hopefully tonight.

I will post pics maybe tomorrow.

Not the arcade Donkey Kong, either. The SNES era 3d rendered Donkey Kong with tie on, you know, hanging out with the ultra random character like Bomb Jack.

The builders first name with cade at the end. "Mikecade"

I get what you’re saying, but I have more respect for people who say “Thanks for the feedback, but I like what I drew and I’m gonna stick with it” as opposed to dudes that just flame out and have a meltdown.

We’re just providing us feedback, you don’t have to take it. I mean, we are usually right, but that doesn’t mean it’s right for your machine. :-)

So here is the artwork.

This is the standard SF2 CE artwork. It is really simple.

Howard commented elsewhere that the SF2 artwork would have been cooler. He is right.

I wanted to use the artwork from the fighting game I know best. So that is what I did.

Fighting games are not my favorite genre because I suck at them, but Arroyo is bringing me around.

Don't forget Q*bert, because naturally you'd want Q*bert on a fighting cab :(=

Nice work Mike

But those are all drawn in the same style.

I thought you were supposed to grab random characters in

different art styles and cram them together.

The bezel turned out to be a pain in the ass.

I am almost done with it.

Since I am staying faithful to SF2 CE artwork, the original bezel is pretty square.

My jank ass cab has a rectangular opening for the bezel.

I tried just creatively cropping the original, but that did not work out.

So I found a Hi Res pic of just the background. I sized it to my bezel area.

I put a white square where I need to cut out for the viewable area.

Next I grabbed a Hi Res image of the real bezel and I cropped out the characters and text from that and pasted it onto my new bezel background.

This has been a good learning experience in basic photoshop skills. I think I am doing okay so far.

I didn't have to really create anything, just cut and paste.

Here it is:

I still need to add a bit to the top right corner.

I also might need to remove the Capcom logo due to the way the CP meets the Bezel glass.

Effort? If you’re going for the actual in-circuit feel, just slice half the portraits off to make it all fit.  :lol

That is kind of what the guy before me did.

He put Street Fighter in this cab and cut down the marquee and hacked up the cardboard bezel to fit.

He didn't even mount the PCB. It was sitting on the floor of the cab.

The CP had so many holes in it that some of the buttons were only mounted in the plexi he put over the top of the CPO.

The man sounds like a master at his craft. His dedication to authenticity should be applauded. He created an authentic, burn down the Chuck E. Cheese quality gaming experience that only a cut-rate operator could provide.

I'm feeling nostalgic just thinking about how ground down those joysticks must have felt.

I can't remember if I took a pic. I will look back.

The marquee light fixture was a standard porcelain incandescent socket with a 60 watt bulb in it.

Burned out...naturally. The socket was held in place with 2 nails bent over to wedge it in place.

Oh, the authenticity... hard to get bent nails these days. Just go down to the hardware store and ask, mostly all you'll get is bank stares. As for the 60 watt incandescent bulb, that belongs in a museum!

Seriously though, have you thought about putting an instructions banner across the bezel, below the monitor? I never know what the special moves are.

The problem is the way this cab is designed I don't think I have the room down there for anything.

The monitor is at a weird angle and the bottom of it is shifted forward.

I bet it was a originally a vertical cab, and they shoehorned that horizontal monitor in.

Everything had SF2 shoe horned into it back in the day.  SF2 probably saved arcades for another 5 years.

I had a track and field converted to SFII back in the day, one of the first cabs I ever bought. Had *A* rainbow edition hack, not *THE* rainbow edition hack.
Specials in air, not turbo speed, hit start to change fighters midmatch , projectiles instant hit, and chunli's air footstop hit anywhere, so you could jump her far beyond the top of the screen.

Most converted SFs I see are in natively horizontal-aspect monitored cabs, like Joust or Robotron. This is the first time I think I’ve seen one in a vertical cab like this. Should be interesting!

Now I think about it, I was pretty much out of arcades by the time I was 18 (1988) so I missed nearly all of this conversion heresy.

Doing a nice job with that mongrel Mike, especially given the orientation mismatch.

First cab I ever had was the same, a convert of a Trog to a SFII rainbow-ish board. The concept of hack boards was completely foreign to me. I remember being pretty damn confused when I was trying to play it.

I am doing more work on this cab than I wanted to. It is all screwed together so it is really easy to replace panels.

And it is not a real arcade cab so I am not really worried about how much of the original stuff I replace.

I just cut a new top piece. Next is the back support at the top of the cab.

Yes. Whoever built this cab didn't make it deep enough. If I tilt the monitor forward the neck will poke out the back. Also notice how close the monitor is to the front of the cab.

It plays nicely.

It is just designed a little weird with the monitor tilted and the bezel glass straight up.

I thought about changing it, but there is a certain charm to its oddness. So it will stay the way it is.

While I am waiting for artwork to arrive I have been doing some cabinet wiring.

I am wiring in a hi to low signal converter for the audio. I want to pull the PCB amplified mono signal down to line level so I can split it and feed it into a small stereo amp that will drive the two 8 ohm

speakers. That way I can also plug a stereo PCB into this cab when I want to switch things up.

It might be totally unnecessary. I am not sure. But mono PCB amps are typically designed to drive a single 8 ohm speaker. When you drive 2 8 ohm speakers depending on series vs parallel wiring you

get much lower volume or worse with lower impedance you overdrive the PCB amp. Maybe this is why you see so many torched PCB amps.

Any audiophiles here can feel free to correct me on this.

I don't know a ton about it. I already had a converter from another project and they are cheap.

I am not in a position to call myself an audiophile by any stretch-
But I do know that when you wire speakers in series that the resistance is accumulative and that many people blow amps that way.

16 ohms is a lot for most little amps to push signal through apparently.

I'm dealing with the same consideration on my jRok Multi-Williams at the moment- and I certainly don't want to fry that board.

I believe if you crank audio output from a JAMMA board down as low as you can get signal out of that you can feed that into an amp and it should not blow the input side.
They are all different of course and require experimentation I guess.

I feel like 2.1 audio for an arcade machine is always fun if you can pull it off.
Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools! I can fix it.

Adding extra speakers in parallel would be what to look out for.  That divides the resistance in half causing the current in the circuit to double.  Adding a speaker in series doubles the resistance and lowers the current so each speaker would output half the power of the original.  Total power would be the same.

The bezel artwork is done.

I am ready to send it all to the printer.

I love that they got Balrog's name wrong on the bezel :)

There are a few versions of SF where the announcer says it wrong too.

Nice progress so far.

I changed the button layout on a Neo Geo cab some time ago and it just did not turn out perfect. Now I understand why you just redid it from scratch.

The cab is starting to come to life.
I am waiting for my artwork.
During that time I have wired the power, sound, and video. Hopefully tomorrow I will wire the coin door and controls.

I also need to come up with a shroud for the monitor.

My artwork finally arrived yesterday.

The artwork from Szabo's looks great.

The problem is that it looks too good.

I might have to bump this thing up to a full restoration some day.

I have friends coming to play games this weekend so I will disassemble the CP after that and get the new CPO applied.

I am going to buy some aluminum maybe today so I can make the marquee retainers.

I don't like the plexi bezel so I am going to get quotes on glass.

I will post some pics of the new artwork when I get a chance.

I have been negligent on posting here. Hopefully I can rectify that soon.

I want to write up some JAMMA stuff for people new to the hobby. And some other useful stuff.

Sorry it took so long Howard.

The artwork looks really good. The marquee is too bright I think. Might have to fix that.

My CPO alignment is slightly off. I probably measured wrong somewhere.

The buttons and sticks are not tightened up in that pic. I wanted to make sure everything was wired correctly first.

I just have to tighten everything down and put the rest of the carriage bolts in.

This thing needs a shroud eventually and some other work, but that is a future me problem.

This is the janky cab. It plays great and that is what matters right now.

I picked up a Jail Break PCB. That is what is playing right now. Before that I was playing 10 Yard Fight.

I have guests coming this weekend so SFII CE is going back in the cab today.
