Janky Street Fighter cab restore sort of...
« on: April 17, 2021, 12:19:28 pm »
I dragged a Street Fighter cab out of some dude's basement in a sketchy neighborhood in Rockford, IL awhile back.

I will dig up some pics and post them here.

The game worked, but I don't think it was ever a legit cab. The construction isn't consistent with commercial arcade machines.

Street Fighter was definitely not the original game in the cab.

Here is documentation on my recent efforts to make this ugly duckling more presentable and playable.

Here is the CP that was on the cab. I stripped off the terrible overlay that was on it.

I thought about spot welding or epoxying a steel plate over the top, but I didn't trust my ability to smooth and blend everything flat afterward.

So I bought a relatively cheap metal brake that can handle up to 18 gauge steel at 30 inches wide. I plan on doing a bunch more CPs for other cabs.

This was a way to get my feet wet.

So the first thing I did was measure the old CP.

I don't have many steel working tools yet so I ordered a piece of sheet steel to the same dimensions as the old CP.

Time to start bending steel.

The clamping bar is pretty wide so it limited my bend options at the end. I kind of forced it to work.

One bend was not pretty, but you can't see it on the cab, and it couldn't really be avoided with the equipment I have.

I must say that is a pretty nice fit for my first steel CP.

Next I went to slagcoin.com to get the Street Fighter joystick and button layout.

After that I printed it out actual size and taped it to the CP.

Next I used a spring loaded punch to mark all of the hole positions.

Next is simply drill the holes. When cutting steel I slow down my drill press and use oil to lubricate the cutting bit.

I couldn't reach a few of the holes with my drill press so I just used a hand drill for those.

I drilled carriage bolt holes smaller than the square shoulder and then filed the holes to shape and size.

Then I gave it a basic rattle can paint job to protect the steel.

The nozzle leaked globs. That is what I get for letting paint sit around forever.

But it is good enough to be eventually covered with a CPO.

If you are paying attention you can see where I ---fouled up beyond all recognition--- up a couple of the carriage bolt holes. It was a learning process.

That was all a couple of weeks ago.

This last weekend I flew out to Arroyo's place.

That is a whole other adventure.

While I was out there he did some Photoshop work for me and gave me a tutorial... (a photoshop tutorial).

When I got home I laid my vector layout file on top of his Photoshop work.

Then I moved the elements around to match my cp.

I had to make a phone call for additional help from Arroyo.

Once that was all sorted I printed it out actual size in super low fidelity and no color.

that way I could match it up to the real CP before it goes off to the printer.

It still needs to be spruced up a bit, but it is almost ready to get printed.

I will post a final pic of the CPO in full color before it goes to the printer.

And that brings you up to date.

I found some pics from the day I brought it home. The first is the basement I pulled it out of. It was supposed to be on the main floor. I got it halfway up the stairs and then renegotiated the price.

I don't have access to a Dynamo cab. I would need a lot of details, but I could take a stab at it.

If I had to venture a guess.......

based on the toe-in at the kick plate, the monitor angle, and the bezel/glass location......

Carnival by Sega/Gremlin , but likely a copy/bootleg based off of that as it lacks the kickplate speaker n stuffs.

It is also put together with screws. The marquee is captured between the cabinet parts. No retainers. And it is short for an upright. It looks like a home built, but there is a serial number stamped into the wood in back.

Yeah, it has a bit of a Walmart shelving feel to it.

Really nice metal work, there. If I had a little more real estate in my shop, I would definitely be going down that path.

You’ve done very nice work on this.  But how are you going to pause the game or bring up the menu?  Volume control?

There will be a volume knob inside the coin door.

There is no pause button, but after you put coins in, a menu, or at least a dialog comes up to let you select 1 or 2 players.

I have a SF2 Champion Edition PCB waiting to be used.
The original Street Fighter is rather painful to play.

I'm hard pressed to think the word janky is appropriate for a build/restoration thread of yours.

Although I suppose what you began with was kinda/sorta.

You should be proud of that control panel.

My first job out here on the rock was with a raingutter company and I learned quickly how tricky bending flat stock can be.  There is only one place on 'Oahu I know of that could make a panel like that- and it might not even look that good.

Do you have a plan for the speaker panel?

Apart from the crooked looking coin door (and I've had a few glasses of red wine mind you) that was the only piece that really screamed janky to me at first glance.
Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools! I can fix it.

I agree, some nice speaker mesh across the top and it will look 1000% better.

My immediate goal is to get the cab playable.

I have a gutted Taito cab that wants to become a Front Line.

And I have a Konami 4 player with Soul Edge in it that I need to do something with.

Once everything is available to play I can worry about making them pretty.

Don't get me started.

The board set is kicking ---my bottom---.

I set it aside out of frustration.

I am going to work on this cab and then circle back around to the Captain's Chair.

I ordered parts for the cab.

I removed the speaker panel and I will cut a new one.

I will post some pics hopefully this weekend after the parts come in.

Whoever built this cab cut the bezel and marquee down to fit this cab. You can have it.

I will pack the art and bring it it Zapcon.

I drilled carriage bolt holes smaller than the square shoulder and then filed the holes to shape and size.

is there a name for that tool?
i have two pre-drilled metal control panels with holes too far apart for the sanwa style joysticks i have and need to drill it.
was going to use a bit to make a hole just big enough for the carriage bolts to snuggly fit and grip the sides.
but if i can make the holes square that would be ideal.
I know what the tool is and what others call it but i'm not finding it anywhere and think i'll have to make one myself.

This is still a bit too big for #10 carriage bolts. I had to grind it down at the end to taper it more.

My solution cost five bucks and a minute or two on the grinder.

I can use the rest of the 400 some odd dollars I saved on beer.

I love tools more than the next guy - I would not spend $400 to make a square hole when I make 4-12 a year..
Square file in a round hole - just enough to get a carriage bolt in for $5?  I'm on board with that..
