Please sanitise my horizontal game list
« on: April 05, 2021, 11:31:39 am »
Hey guys

So I'm finishing up my dedicated horizontal (15Khz low res only) groovymame/CRT cab with the following games.

Cab has a 2 player control panel, with 8-way joysticks and 3 buttons per player.  I'm not particularly into fighters and I'm not really interested in putting anything more recent than early to mid nineties on there.  Trying to keep all games running at their original resolution/refresh rates.

Are there any obvious gems I'm missing?

Aha, Mario Bros and Frenzy - thanks!  :)

I think Qix is vertical?

And Popeye is med-res?   I have a 15Khz CRT and am trying to keep original resolutions/refresh rates etc.  Will update the first post!

Bank Panic and Flicky are two awesome games I don't see on your list.  I also really like Thief but make sure to get the samples from Mr. Do's website.

Thief is so much fun with the audio commentary in the background.  Gives it a perfect feel.

If you like strider then Osman is worth putting on as it's basically an updated version. It's lateish 90s but runs at 240p

Metro cross is awesome. Should be in there.

I'm sure there's a few others I've missed. I'll have to switch my Blip cab on (when I finish painting my pinball!)

Popeye came with a 15khz standard resolution Sanyo EZV

It runs in interlace mode, which effectively doubles the vertical resolution, but makes the thing migraine inducing flickery to look at.

Most emulators, including MAME, are still cheating when it comes to interlace games and running them as if they were genuinely twice the vertical resolution, rather than rendering alternating fields and reproducing the ugly flicker / artefacting.

This will change one day, but for now that's how it is.

A lot of Namco 3D games used the same interlace modes, as did early Midway stuff (Tapper etc.)  Sega were one of the few to use genuine medium resolution monitors and invest in the significantly higher spec hardware needed to power them (they basically have to draw almost twice as many pixels)

Ah right, - interesting, thanks for the explanation. So as I understand it, mame (and groovymame) will render Popeye in med res, so wouldn't work on my 15Khz monitor?

You might want to reconsider Ghosts'n Goblins & Ghouls'n Ghosts.  Those are 4-way controller and will be extremely frustrating to play on an 8-way controller.  They are insanely difficult as it is with the correct controller and probably unbearable with an 8-way.  There may be other 4-ways on your list but those two caught my eye as they are period favorites of mine.

Heh thanks - I'm actually used to it with an 8-way joystick, that's all I've ever played it with!  :)  Plus I don't have room for a dedicated 4-way horizontal cab too... but I do get your point, thanks.

Elevator Action II and Battle toads for sure.

You might want to look into the neogeo library, since you arent into the fighting games, there are a lot of neogeo titles that only use 2 or 3 buttons (Andro Dunos, Pulstar , and Blazing Star for example all only use 2 buttons) and you can play the vertical shmup Strikers 1945 Plus since it was adapted to a horizontal output for the NeoGeo release.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Threads like this are killing me... there are so many games I've never even heard of that I want to try!  Just when I think my game lists are finished I have to go back in and add stuff...

I haven't had any time to play anything in a while and I now have a notebook that I scribble games in to try next time I can turn a machine on.

Even with the "No Filler" edit it seems there is still a pile I will never live long enough to try all of.

Heh I wouldn't worry about it too much, everyone knows actually playing the games is massively over-rated! ;)
