nice job with the plans. i think my cp base and monitor base will be a little more flashy than those plans. just little stuff as you can tell in my Mamestrosity project in the proj. forum. one thing im trying to figure out....if you look at the monitor part...not the base pedestal, but the box that holds the tv....will the tv hang out the back of the box? i mean, you set the tv in the frame that you have, and then the back of the tv....where does it go? just hang out the back? that will solve heat issues i guess, but it will look kinda funky. i went to my local arcade and saw one of their showcase cabs, and they have the monitor hanging out the back, but with like a metal frame with vents screwed to the back. well i dont have a metal frame, and i have no clue how to make one or substitue for one. any suggestions? |

yeah, I wondered about the back end of the TV myself. As I picked up the 27" TV I was gonna use, the one thing I noticed was it's WAY front heavy. If you look at most of these designs, the monitor base is essentially an upside down "T". My plan is to go with a completely enclosed cabinet (look at someone's entertainment center for an example of what I mean) and then wire two exhaust fans above the TV. The reason for the exhaust fans is to wick away the heat. The TV I got for free cuz it was overheating and having problems (also had it happen with a smaller one, too) so I know for CERTAIN you want removal of heat from the back of your TV. The metal frame seems to be a standard, as they've got the same thing on the machines in the arcade by me. I bet that's just on there so some knucklehead doesn't shove something into it and either electrocute himself or screw up the machine! If you and your fiance plan to have kids, or you may have kids over to the house once in a while, enclose the whole shebang and have one less thing you have to worry about. I've got three 27" TV's. Depths of them from front of tube to back of set are 19 3/4", 20 1/2", and 20". Add perhaps another 2 inches for cords to exit without a 90 degree kink in 'em and that should be enough.....not a monolithic-looking structure, IMO, like a bookcase, but just a bit thicker. If you want the metal frame, angle iron will probably work just fine. You'll need a drill press and tapping oil to make fastener holes, or be able to weld. Then, just fachion a box frame with that. |

well i thought about making one big box like thing for the monitor part, but that would defeat the purpose of one of my goals with this project. and that is that i wanted to be able to be disassembled in a somewhat easy fashion. i would have 4 pieces....1 is the cp box, 2 is the cp pedestal, 3 is the monitor base, and 4 is the monitor box. so if built one big thing for the monitor like on the gauntlet legends cabs at www.klov.com, if you look at their showcase style part, its all incased. so what i may do, is just build that back brace part out of mdf. i know it may be a little weird, but it would work. the whole metal thing is a big deal for me and i dont have a drill press or welding skills or anything like that. im still trying to think of what to put back there, but right now the only thing that comes to mind is a box frame made out of mdf. |
