Gotta love my mom.

40 years after she got me my (now MIA) original 2600 she gets me this.

Been sitting around since my last birthday waiting to fire up for family game night and I open the box and see...
HDMI cord.

Of course I want to play it on one the CRTs I've been hoarding.

Any good suggestions for (ahem!) downgrading this to what I want or is that a bad idea for some reason I'm not aware of?

Could just plug it into the screen in the living room, but seems kinda lame, yeah?
Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools! I can fix it.

Should I assume, from the "HD" tag on corner and HDMI cable, that it outputs in at least 720p? Maybe 1080p? In which case the video output already goes through a 3x or 4x scaler?

Many people go through a lot of trouble to play their games like this on HDTVs, so maybe count your blessings?

Maybe there are some alternative settings available for SD CRT play? Can you use other standard Atari video cables with it, or is HDMI really the only option?

Check out my completed projects!

HDMI out only.

I suppose I really need to plug the thing in and see what I get and report back if nobody else had commented on this unit anywhere here.

Excited to play some games I haven't played in decades- and some I never got to play at all even!

Just saw the smallprint on front - 720p, so HDTV all the way.

Dammit!

And your eyesight is better than mine

Or maybe your ability to focus

Probably both actually

If you want to play atari games on a crt why not use an actual atari?   The things are worthless... you can probably pick one up on ebay for 50 bucks or so.   Couple that with a $50 atari uno cart and you are good to go.

Funny that, I discovered that the reason I couldn't find my original one was that it was sold- along with boxes of cartridges- for $40 at a yard sale.

Apparently nobody thought I would have still wanted it.
Of course it explains this new replacement.

Thanks for the tip Howard.  I'll have to look into that too when I have a chance.
