Ghouls n Ghosts n Tully (complete)
« on: February 23, 2021, 11:22:40 am »
Looks like I'm gonna build a new Tully cabaret.

The vision is simple.

Have pretty much everything on hand in the ole parts box.
Managed to snag a coin door for less than $40

Final pics

First challenge was the artwork. Took me a while to settle on the theme.

I need to make the artwork flow with the bezel like I did with the galaga cab. Since the cp art wraps down the front on ghouls n ghosts cab I thought I could slide the skulls and logo down for the kick plate art.

I decided to drop the left hand buttons to save space and flip the player start buttons to the right hand side. (Sorry for the photo quality)

Kick plate

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Looks great so far.  My only comment would be to remove the Ghouls N Ghosts logo from the kick plate if you are also planning on the exact same design for the marquee.  Having it in 2 places on the same panel so close together would be a bit much and the skulls look cool on their own anyway.  Then I would also chop off some of the black on the top so the edge is the same distance from the top right skull as it is along the bottom.

Are you using Inkscape for the art?  I am slowly trying to learn but right now all I can do is manipulate basic shapes...

I was definitely thinking about it. The marquee is different than the kickckplate, but they both say GnG, was thinking I could get away with it since the original ghouls n ghosts cab had the marquee and that logo on the front of the cp.
Also one thing that kept me from moving the logo from the kick plate design is that I'm using downloaded photoshop files and just light editing. It's like going through the spikes and skulls so I would have to re draw sections.

I'm just using regular ole photoshop.

Why?  Works great for me.  Little heavy but otherwise nice and flat surfaces that don't warp.

Yeah. His cab will turn out fine. Just working with MDF sucks. Every time someone moves a cab made out of that ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- they will be reminded.

I feel you its heavy. I usually use birch. I've only built sub boxes out of mdf but I've always wanted to try a cab with it. Plus it's pretty cheap compared to the good plywood. We'll see how it goes.

MDF is heavy. My back aches everytime I think of it. However, 1/2" is a bit lighter than the 3/4".
Thats my only complaint, well that and the massive amounts of dust it puts off when you cut it.
Hint: Be sure to use a quality dust mask when you cut it with saw or router (especially router).
Earplugs (or muffs) will not only protect your hearing from tool noise damage but also keep that fine dust from finding its way into your ears.
While Im wearing my safety inspector-wanna be hat, dont forget good eye protection. But you already know all this.

Yeah - all valid points about MDF but I think the finished product is worth the extra weight.  Whenever I use plywood - even the good stuff - there is a little bowing or warping to the panels and it makes me crazy.  It feels like I have a lot more control over MDF but I haven’t tried plywood in a while...

What size monitor is in the Galaga?  I’ve been thinking about throwing one of these together but I’d want to use a vertical monitor if possible.  Not sure 17” would fit so I’m guessing it’s 13”?

Maybe.  I have to store it outside so the temp changes get to it.  Last time I used plywood it warped slightly - looking down the edge there was a slight bow and when I bought it I made sure it was dead straight.  Cabinet grade expensive stuff too.  Oh well.

LOL yeah when I say outside I really mean my detached garage that gets to be like 100+ degrees in the summer and icicles from the rafters in the winter.  It's obviously not weatherproofed and if I leave anything in there that can be eaten, the mice will eat it.  There's an asphalt floor that has broken apart over the years and is mostly dirt now.  Finishing it has been on my to-do list forever.  Maybe this summer...

I found a few minutes after work yesterday to piece it together and rout the marquee and coin door holes. Will have to pull them screws out because I noticed my t mounding slot cutter blades are going to hit them. No big deal though I'm a problem solver. I do repairs for a living.

I would just pull out a couple screws at a time and cut the t-molding slots.  If the T-molding hits during install it's pretty each to notch it.

A piece of the bit for the router broke of and really fudged the edges. Will sand out.

Thanks man. I've decided I'm only doing Tully's from now on. Maybe a spinner one next? Arkanoid? A smash TV one would be cool. Maybe 2 side by side linked up for mortal kombat 2 player lol.

Tullys are best for single player/control games. Arkanoid sounds great. SmashTV, not much so.

Like I said, if I build another one, it’s going to be a Star Trek.

Thanks. I've seen ghouls n ghosts in white and black t moulding, even red once. Considered all 3 but decided white might look the best.

it took 2 hrs to cut my tully out.
that includes the trip to home depot and having them cut a sheet of MDF into 2x4' sections.

I did it at work on the clock with my brother's help. We do building stuff for a living so we had it drawn out and cut within 20 minutes. I was able to transport it home in my car at that point.

You got a theme or button scheme planned yet?

That's pretty sweet.  I do not build stuff for a living for some reason (poor choice of career by me) and I just have 1 table and some tools in my garage.  Everything is dull too.  No theme yet (going to be VERY plain) but controls will be 4-way and 2 buttons with vertical monitor.  I'm doing 2 at once so it should be an interesting summer...

What does building an arcade cabinet have to do with making your living enabling alcoholics to spend money at your place rather than spend time with their families?

I found these on ebay for cheap a while back and bought them to save me the photoshop trouble. They are replicas for the original ghouls n ghosts. They are the perfect size for the Tully. Lucian045 will be working on a couple custom pieces for me.

Looking awesome!  I couldn't find where you said what will be running inside.  Do you have original boards or something else?  I've played a bunch of Ghouls N Ghosts on the Mister lately after seeing you post about this project.

Just a regular ole mame cab. I haven't figured out what to put in it. I have a pile of pc towers in my room lol.

What are you doing for audio?  I don't see a cutout on the front panel... it might not even matter I guess but usually there is something.  I like the simplicity of the marquee and coin door underneath and nothing else.

Also, where did you get the coin door?

EDIT: Never mind - looks like you got it used.  Cleaned up nice!

Yeah ebay is my go to some times for good deals.  Can of hammered black will clean it up nicely.
On my galaga build I attempted a nintendo style speaker cutout and totally ruined it. Filled it in and sanded it nicely. You can't tell it was ever there.  I ended up mounting the speakers on the inside unseen. Sounds fine to me. Will probably do the same here.

Anybody interested in helping make a game list? Looking for an all killer no filler list suited for an 8 way 2 button horizontal setup. I really dig platformers, side scrolling shmups, run n guns, fight and go right. 2 player games welcome as long as I can play single player as this is a single player cab. ( I can't Not play contra)

List:
Ghosts n goblins
Ghouls n ghosts
Haunted castle
Rastan
Black tiger
Magic sword
Gradius
R type
Darius
Contra
Bazerk
Rygar
Ninja Kid 2
Tiger Road
Rolling Thunder
3 Wonders
Wardner

Map magic to both buttons pressed at the same time on Golden Axe.  Problem solved.

Or, hear me out, make it 3 buttons and remap your games so that Ghouls N Ghosts is like Attack - Jump - Attack.

I like the first idea better. I'm dead set on 2 buttons. Though I thought real hard about a genesis or neo geo theme.

I guess you are trying to stick with the 2 buttons from the Ghouls and Ghosts panel?  Sure would be nice to have 3.  Usually we are talking people down from 8...lol.  With 3 you get all the Metal Slugs or do the 2 button combo thing pbj suggested for grenades.

I like a small limited game list. Gives me a reason to build another one. If I added another button now I would have to change the theme or It will bother me.

Got the marquee and kickplate in thanks to Lucian045. Rints came out great. Wish I made the kickplate a little taller, and the 2 ghouls n ghosts does bother me a little bit but I can live with it.

Also I got some light bleeding under the cp but I can fix that.

Looking good.  That is such an awesome marquee.  One of my favorites even though I am absolutely terrible at the game.  Not too much left to do now I bet.  You are really moving fast.

I'll be honest I've never made it out of the first area. But there is an old video game saying "get good" and get good I shall. Saving the control panel for last. Just tweeking the art so everything lines up.

Best part about these cabs is I can still pick it up by myself. Managed to get it inside. The front porch stairs were the hardest lol.

These little cabarets are so perfect they almost make me want to get rid of my DK.  I could put two of these things in the same place and cover a lot more games.

Hey check out what I got today. Should be able to wrap it up this weekend. Just need to prime and paint the bezel, route out the joystick area. Put it back together and toss in a computer.

Looking good.  The CPO is so simple yet it just works for this cabinet.  You are flying through this build.

Thanks. I like the way it came out. Trying to blend the bezel with the cp was tricky so I got rid of the skulls and stuff that was part of the overhang, but I didn't want to lose it all together which is why I converted it to a kickplate.

2 years ago today I finished the galaga. I just might be able to finish this one today. My router broke yesterday. I snapped the locking shaft over tightening a bit. So I had to cut out the insert for the joystick mount with a hammer and chisel. 1 plus of the mdf is that it is real easy to chisel.

This thing came out great.  Really nice job!  :applaud:

How does it work?  You just power on from the back and MAME boots straight to GnG?  I don't see an exit button on the CP so I guess there's no menu or anything that you can accidentally back out into?

Haven't finished setting up a frintend. But there is a menu. The player 1 and player 2 botton on the right act as the exit/ back button when pressed at the same time for longer than a second. I didn't want any admin buttons.

Yeah on my first build i felt like I needed a landing strip of admin buttons. Finally narrowed it down to 2 or three. (Not counting credits and P1 P2 start buttons)

My first build was a mess. 2 player street fighter layout and a bunch of admin buttons ( pause, exit, save, load,) every emulator imaginable. Some required external USB controllers. It was dumb and newbies had no idea how to control it. Simple is better.

Was really getting into some ghouls and ghosts last night, but couldn't get close to breaking the stock high score. Then I switched over too ghosts and goblins and I now believe side by side ghost in goblins is a superior game. Seems a little faster and I was way better at it, crushing the stock high score. Still like the ghouls n ghosts artwork better.

Highly recommend. Most front ends have the ability to map button combo's. Some even let you set how long you have to have to hold a button or buttons down.
