The holy grail... or the next best thing.
« on: May 08, 2020, 02:48:54 pm »
Hi everyone, this is my first post on this forum! Yay!

I'm nearing the end of my cocktail cabinet build and, at the start of the build, I had the idea of including a HDMI out so that I can plug into my wall mounted tv for some lightgun action. So, a couple of weeks ago I started looking into how we get lightguns working with modern tech. This forum has been a great source of info so thanks!

Obviously I eventually stumbled on Sinden. I signed up immediately on his waiting list to buy two guns.

However, I have a dream. I want to relive the days of almost missing the film due to playing point blank and time crisis in the mini arcade at our local cinema. It's all about those baby blue and pink namco, full recoil, arcade guns for me. I started looking for donors in order to migrate the sinden 'inners' over to.

After searching all the usual places, I started to reliase that this wasn't really going to be an option. Not without waiting a long time for shells at the right price and in good enough condition to come up for sale.

Then, I remembered the Namco Guncon my mate had. This was a really great lightgun but just didn't have that awesome kick back. My friend then bought "The Real Arcade Gun" which is, to understanding, a clone of the Namco Arcade guns but for use on home consoles. I had a look and found you can get these on ebay fairly regularly for not bad prices. But, not Namco. Not legit. Not allowed.  ::)

So, I bought a Gcon for £10 off ebay and stripped it down to the shell:

and then this happened...

So, it seems promising. More measuring, modelling and printing and I'm nearing a proof of concept. I sourced a 24v solenoid that I *think* is comparable to the Namco originals. I was going to wait until I had a fully working prorotype before posting here but I'm waiting on a linear bearing which I think will be well into next week beofre it arrives.

I'll be posting all the 3D printed models on Thingiverse once I'm happy with them and I'll post a full how to once it's complete.

Oh, and the idea here is to incorporate the Sinden tech in one way or another. Andy at Sinden is keen to release a DIY kit albeit he has no idea when it will be available. I think for my initial gun, I'll be carefully listing the electronic from a Sinden gun and transplanting them into here. I just hope there's room left! I can always rejig the models in order to make it fit. It HAS to fit!

I'm very excited. Preliminary test of the solenoids are very prmising :) Thanks for reading!

I am!

No progress unfortunately as I moved house last week and we're in a bit of a mess still.

Once I have my workshop sorted, I'll be back onto this project in earnest.

I have received my Sinden lightgun and it's amazing!

That guide rail and bearing are a bit much for the application, but keep going!
