Considering the button layout of a mortal kombat cabinet that gamelist is exceedingly stupid.  Why not just include all the games that actually use that layout?

Gamelist should have been:

Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat II
Mortal Kombat 3
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
WWF Wrestlemania
BioFreaks

agreed, but this line of legacy cabinets is entry level for them
$299 - NO riser, lighted marquee

people that buy these will just want 12 games, and apparently these runs won't be limited,
so that way people can always buy them.

the $399 version will have a riser and lighted marquee.

but toobin works, 5 buttons per person, but most of the other dont.
defender will be bad (2 way vertical), so will rampage (2 player), gauntlet (2 player rom),
bubbles (49 way stick), joust (2 way horizontal).

Yes, Real deal, Only way to go...One coin, one game.

true, but a defender / stargate [defender 2] has enough overlap,

so that a 2-1 machine would be a space saver.

you're only adding the inviso button, so the rest of the control panel would be the same.

Everyone is entitled to think however they like, but that's an old fashioned way to think. Clutching on to the past. Combining games for home arcades is a great idea for most users to save electricity, money, reduce complexity, and save space. If someone prefers 100% authenticity and wants to have a dozen full size arcade machines over a single machine, go for it. More power to them.

And lets not forget, some of the "real deal" manufacturers released combo machines like Galaga\Ms. Pacman, Golden Tee\Silver Strike Bowling. Multi-Choice, and Donkey Kong\Donkey Kong Jr,\Mario Bros.
Galaga\Ms. Pacman So, "one coin, on game" isn't a golden rule or anything.

I'll go on record as saying I don't care for how far the marquee is set back. The reveal of the cabinet sides is too much. To me it screams "consumer grade" and just doesn't help the machine look substantial. Also, if that's a decal for the coin door, they would do better to not do anything than use a coin door sticker. I think a non-functioning plastic mold coin door would be their best option, if they are going to try to do a coin door at all.

I actually own the 1st wave pf this machine. It's in my kids playroom, which is funny if you think about how far we've come. Mortal Kombat caused a stir in the 90's for being overly violent and today it's in my 8 and 10 year old daughters playroom with a list of fatalaties. It's a good machine, that plays MK well. I'm pretty good at 2 and 3 and don't have an issue with it. I prefer it to my mame cabinet with the 6 button SF layout.

super breakout had 3 different versions on it originally.

so, it's not like it was a new thing back in the 70s.

That one is on me. I mistakenly thought you were making a case for dedicated machines, not a single dedicated machine just for Defender. Defender is a special case, and I agree. It can really only be combo’d with Stargate.

stargate (defender 2),

makes the first defender game look like kindergarten and kids play.

there is so much stuff going on, and when you become an expert (i'm not),
watching stargate with inviso, and space levels will make you wish you
were back playing and easy game of defender.

yes, you have 'stargates' to warp, and inviso, but good luck using them unless you're an expert.

I have a love hate with Defender. In 2006, I built a multi-Williams game. You'll notice the green button for Stargate Inviso:

I got rid of it in 2009. I didn't like using a 4 way for Defender and the reverse button was a little too far away.

In 2012, I built another defender. This time, I bought a NOS defender 2 way stick, and I put my controls exactly where they should be. I used a PC and Mame. It was good, my buddy has an actual Defender and Stargate. In 2018, the computer died and I replaced it with a 19-n-1 and Jamma.
http://And in 2020, I extended the sides of the bartop and converted it to a cabaret machine. You can see on the control panel the inviso button is there, but I have Stargate available on the 19-n-1. It boots straight into Defender. I can't manage Stargate. Like you said Neg1, too much stuff going on

So, to Jenns point, for me there is only 1 way to play Defender, and that's with proper controls. I love the game, but I'm terrible at it. I don't know if original hardware is better or worse than the 19-n-1's, because I'm not great at either. I have yet to break 100k.

The concern I had was the screen size. I'm pretty sure the swarmers and enemy bullets were going to be a problem for me to see. Those cabinets are nice, but I think they should've been built around a 15" screen.

hyperspace is a useless button.

on defender just remap it to invisio, and play stargate that way.

of course, it woudn't work for experts, because of the weird location,
but then you wouldn't have to alter the cabinet.

Speaking of Defender its the only original arcade I own.  I thought owning one I would be able to get good at it but it hasn't worked.  Maybe I don't play it enough.  I have scratch builds of Robotron and Joust and I tend to gravitate to the Robotron.  Its the only one I'll claim to have gotten good on...I've topped 5 million with difficulty 5, 25K/man.  Never played Mortal Kombat.  Couldn't get interested in the fighting games too many moves to memorize.

Not really, It consolidates 2 of their old cabinets into 1 plus bonus games : mortal kombat, and rampage
and attracts new people that want more games for the money, than the usual 3.

pre-orders sold out near instantly.

well, apparently people are trying to play trackball games, and other games with a star wars yoke,
so i don't really think that's an issue for complaint.

if you really wanted the correct control for bubbles, paperboy, etc, yeah, you're going to mod it.

At this point you have to ask yourself who exactly is putting these lists together for these machines.

Have to agree with Howard et alia.
There are so many games with sensible control overlap, why mix things that detract from enjoying all of the list on any one machine?

So many machines already, why not just make nothing but awesome ones (even if it sometimes cuts the game list number per machine down?)

And maybe they don't understand the concept of loss leaders either (but I imagine they are making PLENTY of $$ on these things.)

I would buy a Paperboy or Spy Hunter with legit controls and function- even if it only played one game!
Why'd you kick me?
Where's your brain?

Hardcore enthuasists or specialty game fans are not the audience.
Sure you would buy a unique game, but unless is a super mega hit or license like Star Wars, they will never do it.

The number of people buying the games biggest complaint, is that machines only had 2-4 games on them,
so that's why they're throwing a ton on these 'legacy' cabinets, to save them space, and give a better value.

YES, they will play terrible without the proper controls, but most people don't know and don't care about the
more obscure ones.

They're not obscure to old timers, and gamers, but most common people will stick with the main ones, and only
try the others a few times if at all.

Here's what's most likely happening.... they contact WB for the license to the MK games and they say "sure but you've got to buy these other ones" and they just throw them on the cab with them.  Since MK has such a unique layout if they had put all the games that Midway made that used the layout it'd be an even bigger seller than it will be already.   Shoot they could have even arranged to put that Judge Dredd prototype on there.

Totally disagree, the biggest complaints are the customer service, lack of communication, and delayed orders. I'd say next up is quality control in regards to shipping issues, parts failing, DOA, etc.. I think adding more games is on the list of feature enhancements, but I don't think it's the "biggest complaint".

Here’s my question, and I mean this sincerely, I’m not trying to be snarky or anything, but if the point of these machines is that they’re smaller and are good for people with no space, why would anyone buy more than one? Don’t multiple machines also take up room? It seems like one good MAME cab could go a lot farther than buying four or five of these machines.

I get selling “legacy versions”, but if I already have one or two, why would I want to buy the latest offering?

Always makes me nuts when companies half-ass things and I know there are people who genuinely love to play who don't have time or skill or space to be obsessed like most of us here appear to be.

I worked for Burton Snowboards for 6 years when I lived in New England and the mantra there from Jake himself was always "Make the best product we can- cost and current demand be damned.  And next year we will make it even better."

We made the most expensive gear on the planet, commanded 85% of the global market and it was the best quality you could find.
The customer service was light years better than everybody else too.

And the stuff that would sell out first and be impossible to find?!
All the most expensive gear.

Sure, consoles pretty much killed the arcades, but you would think somebody would start a company to REALLY do home arcade machines well.
Top shelf machines, top shelf price, and the people who get it will buy them.

Especially if most people are going to be locked in their house for years on end-

We've had plenty of high end arcade machine builders. The biggest problem is the market. Normal folks don't know what they want. They want that nostalgic feeling and for 1 person, that's Centipede and Spy Hunter and Gauntlet. They want 1 machine that plays those 2 games perfectly, and they'd also like it to play another 50 games they have fond memories of. For someone else, it'll be a different set of games with different controls, monitor types, etc.

You would think that, but -1’s posts show that he knows the market. They don’t care, man, as long as it plays the Galaga! like they might have remembered it.

That's not snarky. It's a good question, and to your point, some people are selling their original Mortal Kombat to buy the legacy. Believe it or not, plenty of other people are holding on to their original Mortal Kombat because they think it's a collectible and will go up in value.

One of the advantages of these machines is they are smaller, but it isn't just a space issue. Being smaller means 1 person can move the machine up/down a flight of stairs, or can load 4 of them in a SUV. There is a convenience factor that I like anytime I need to move one around. Their biggest claim to fame is probably just timing. They hit the market at the right time and right price point with the right retailers to get the ground swell of fans.

Their latest strategy seems to be FOMO. Making a limited number of machines causing people to snap up the pre-orders.

Did you guys see the Supreme Mortal Kombat Arcade1up crossover? As far as things I don't get and are dumb, this one is up there. Those things are selling for a lot on ebay.

I don't know... invest in a good dolly and one person can manage a cab fairly easy.   I don't find their lightness to be a selling point but rather a negative.  I'm not that big a guy and I shake these poor things around like a rag doll with even light play.   I remember trying the pac-man in walmart when these first came out and almost tipping it over into the isle.   Also when you buy 20 of them (like every youtube poser seems to be doing) the space saving argument goes out the window.

That's not how it works, lol. They are smaller than a full size arcade machine, so if you have 20 Arcade1up's, that's still more than the number of full size machines you could fit in the same space. Plus, they don't dominate the room like a full size arcade machine. I have 2 in my kids playroom and their smaller size makes them fit into the room better. It's just an all around convenience factor for so many people. Go to the store and buy arcade1up, go home and put them together. You'll be playing video games within a few hours.

While I understand why some of us would say the arcade experience is lacking with these arcade1up's, it's hard to deny the convenience and logistics to buying them. For years, we've witnessed nearly everyone here make sacrifices by using emulation, or a LCD, or whatever. It doesn't seem like a bit stretch to imagine that a large portion of the population, who were probably more casual gamers in the first place, be ok with the Arcade1up's. To them, it's probably a huge improvement over the Jakks handheld sticks.

The number of people buying the games biggest complaint, is that machines only had 2-4 games on them,
so that's why they're throwing a ton on these 'legacy' cabinets, to save them space, and give a better value.

The lack of number of games, is the biggest complaint.

All that talk about bad customer service, etc, while true, is only for a miniscule amount of people that barely make
a dent in their bottom line, which is why they haven't improved it. Because it really doesn't matter if those people
become disinterested, complain, or boycott them. There are several hundred or thousands more that will never complain.

After only what, 2 or 3 years now?
It appears they sure have sold a hell of a lot of cabinets.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out really.

And you have to wonder how many people are buying 1Ups, playing them for a bit and then selling them to make room for newly released titles at this point.

There appears to be a little secondary market for them appearing out here anyway.

The lack of number of games, is the biggest complaint.

What's your source on this? This is a silly complaint since it's clear the number of games that are on a cabinet. That's known when you buy it. What catches people by surprise is the QC and number of delays and that's the majority of the complaints I see.
