Major havoc - roller controller - USB build
« on: November 27, 2020, 12:37:48 pm »
pboland at atariage is making some usb roller controllers
for Major Havoc, or other games that could use it.

if you're interested, leave him a note.

It uses a skateboard wheel (70 mm dia. x 51 mm long). Again, this is meant as a cost effective type controller and not a true reproduction of the original. With that in mind my controller will be made of mainly 3D printed parts and because of the way I'm making this, back lighting the wheel isn't planned. As to the sizing of the roller, it's close to the original, but not exactly the same (I didn't want to have to make/cast custom rollers). I am trying to make the mounting close to original, but of course that's a little hard to find. I did come across an image that had some dimensions on it and decided to run with that. Here's the mounting I'm going to be using for my roller controller:

he hasn't listed a price. just sign up, and let him know you're interested.

he's got 7 green ones so far.

i'm going to get a green one, so when he announces the price i'll list it here.

i hope its not too expensive, or over $50? i could be way off, i bought his
replica tempest spinner for that much.

price is $75, he didn't make a black one, because no one wanted it in that color:

Things are finally starting to move along. I'm probably still 2+ weeks out. I still have to:

- Calibrate/test each controller

- Make/print the mounting templates

- Assemble the mounting hardware

- Print up a few more boxes

- Put a video together showing it in action

All twelve units are now accounted for!

When I started out on this project I was trying to make a more cost effective Major Havoc roller controller that would easily work with MAME. It wasn't as easy as I though it would be (a lot of trial and error), but I think I've achieved what I set out to do. The price for this controller is going to be $75.00 plus shipping (includes hook-ups for two buttons). To put that in perspective, that's a quarter of the price of the current offerings for a controller like this. I will be contacting every person on my list when I'm ready to ship. After that, I guess I will start a new list. :)

For now here's a picture I took of all the assembled Master Havoc USB wheel controller units:

Yes, that's 13 units. One is an extra for myself. I personally like the "Red" controller. So as you guys can see, one person did want a controller with a different colored wheel. Unfortunately, nobody wanted a "Black" wheel.

So, more to come...

THIS is cool.

Glad somebody finally did this.

VERY reasonable price too.

I will buy one (any color) if there is another run.
Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools! I can fix it.

he mentioned he will be working on more after this.

Got my controller yesterday. Had time to test it out with a few games. Also, with some spinner games.

It is excellent in build quality, nice and heavy. The roller spins very freely.

I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good replacement.

I have not tested wiring up any buttons to it yet though.

I will post a longer review, when I get a chance.

The maker is still taking requests. He's up to 14 units so far.

This might not be as accurate as the other person making them,
but slightly more affordable.
