How to block Windows/AMD from updating crt emudriver?
« on: October 08, 2020, 05:26:06 am »
After a day or two Windows 10 decides to update my crt emudriver with AMD's latest drivers making me have to reinstall everything again. Whats the best way to block this on Windows 10?

W7 it's your friend  :dunno

I don't like boatware (cortana, etc.) and system updates on W10; scanners, printers, etc. fails often

Yeah I used to use crt emudriver with a Windows 7 PC but now i have the CRT on my main PC. I'm surprised not many other people are discussing this issue.

Win7 is great OS but sadly is getting on with the times. Great if you just have PC for crt emudriver and retro stuff though.

I think most people with dedicated CRT setups don't connect to the Internet so it doesn't become an issue.

Either way, this behavior from Windows 10 is reprehensible.

The tool Display Driver Uninstaller has an option to disable driver updates; might be worth looking at as well.

But yes, the ultimate option is to just disconnect it from the network. I've also begun tinkering with 'Windows Ameliorated Edition' build which strips out all of the update engine and other bloat. CRT Emudrivers installed fairly painlessly on that, though I did run into an issue with videos not being displayed in Hyperspin, but that was resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in Flash.

Hopefully you don't have Windows 10 home, and instead have Pro/enterprise. If so, you can use group policy to block updates.

Thanks, unfortunately I have Home. =(

I may upgrade from Home to Pro for $20 AUD just for this lol.

Honestly it's worth it. They really crippled windows 10 home. You'll have much more control over your system with pro, which is even more important with an emulation PC setup.

I'm on Win10 connected to the net, and i don't get this issue at all. Every 12-15 months windows does a creator update and wipes the drivers completely, upon which i reinstall and restore my modeslines from backup. But it certainly doesn't try to roll over every couple of days...?
